China's State Administration of Industry & Commerce (SAIC) has rejected Blizzard Entertainment's application to have StarCraft: Ghost registered as an E-sports brand. The SAIC is claiming that the registration's subtext of "astrology" and "Ghost" stands in contrast to China's "socialist morality" and would promote "feudal superstition".
Blizzard appealed against the decision to the Beijing Municipal First Intermediate People's Court, claiming the registration was for game news, esport and other projects trademarked under Blizzard's Battle.net online gaming service. The company tried convincing the court the registration wasn't an attempt to "disseminate feudal superstition or engaging in superstitious, illegal activities."
Blizzard's best efforts to convince the court the registration was just for a video game and wouldn't produce any "adverse effects" went in vain, the case was dismissed by the court, despite Blizzard already having 9 types of merchandise registrations for the same name.
Blizzard has since filed an appeal against the courts decision.
Being that Blizzard is going through all of this effort, it seems highly unlikely they're just registering the name for the sake of having control over its use.
Starcraft: Ghost was originally a Starcraft inspired 3rd person shooter for consoles which was eventually shelved, it would appear as though the concept has evolved since its original inception, given that the description of the original concept sounds like a rather improbable esport title.
This could well be Blizzard's new top-secret MMO title. Sure, they said it wouldn't be a Starcraft based game, but that's exactly what you would expect someone hiding a Starcraft based MMO to say!
