SK sat down with the mastermind of the DotA-league Moritz 'Mooseman' Zimmermann. Read about how he came up with the idea of the Dota-League, its background and future.Hi Moritz, first of all feel free to give the SK community a brief introduction of yourself.
I am one of the founders of the Dota-League and have been with this project intensly in the last one and a half years. Prior to that I was finishing my studies in media design which didn´t give me too much time to help DL. Right now I take care of all PR, marketing, design, news on Dota-league.com, organizing offline events etc.
You created the the DotA-League. After seeing this tournament here in Hannover one gets the feeling that you have achieved quite something. How did it come this far and are you proud of it?
I didn't create the Dota-League myself. The two brothers Markus 'Carnie' Blum and Marcel 'spudlich' Blum and Martin 'm0rdiN' Hermes are the true founders of it. They had this great idea. I am currently just the only one who has most time to work on everything that needs improvements and organisation. The offline event needed quite a large amount of organisation and of course I did not do everyhing by myself. I would not have been able to without the great help of all the admins from DL. Especially Martin 'm0rdiN' Hermes and Mathias 'dopeshow' Schmedeshagen played a major role in anything that needed to be done in order to realize this event. Now after the Dota-League Masters, I am more than happy and satisfied that everything went really well. We had some internet problems in the beginning and weren't able to stream the games. It's a pitty that we were not able to even get news out due to the broken internet connection in order to let all the people online take part in it. However here in Hannover at the Entertainment Convention, everything went pretty smooth and I can definitely call it a success.
So I believe you stuck quite some work into this whole concept. Where did you get the ideas from?
We definitely put a lot of work into creating the Dota-League over the years and we are still improving it every single day. We basically picked up exsisting concepts from other games like Counter-Strike, Warcraft 3 and Starcraft and have just put them all together to create our own unique project. Our focus clearly lies on just one single game, which is DotA and that gives us the chance to be the best at what we do since we can solely concentrate on what is important. I am not even sure if there is another league that only supports just one game.
What will the future of the DotA-League look like? Will it be able to get bigger and host these kind of tournaments which are definitely model examples for DotA?
If we can host more offline events that get the attention of sponsors and investors and that show DotA's real potential, then I see a bright future for it. But apart from that, the community is extremely large. There should be about 11 million DotA players there today and that should already show how prominent this game/modification is. Most important is that DotA stays such a great game and that the improvements made by IceFrog will make it better and better each day.
What do you say about this tournament. Which teams did you wish to see in the finals? I bet you are a little pissed off that SK only was able to take home bronze!
The tournament went extremely well from my point of view. All the teams showed up on time, played all their matches well, the shoutcasts were amazing (props to NiceTry and Warbringer) and the set up by the Entertainment Convention was professional. I would have loved to see any team in the finals, especially eSuba and MET who are really great guys. SK not making it into the finals is a pitty. I wouldn't say that I am pissed about their spot since I have to stay neutral as a DL admin. But Loda, Tompa, Kwom, Hailo and Snow are all really great guys that deserve a good spot. Hope we will be able to see them at a next event we might hold in the near future ;)!

Keep the good work!
That's a bit over-estimated imo. Icefrog gave the numbers "5 to 8 millions", mentionning this number is based on "extra" downloads from bnet / lan / other mirrors. However, it seems that the average map download is around 2 to 3 millions (which is good already). Going from 3 to 6 is a thing already, but 3 to 11, nah. WoW is 11 millions players and judging by the HUGE amount of discussions "in real life" from WoWnerds everywhere, I'm sure dota is not that famous.
1st. Blizzard said that despite thinking on a WC4 game, there is currently noone working on the title. Before hiring a 3rd-party modder, they would probably determine what kind of game WC4 will be, inside Blizzard.
There are a few reasons BLizzard might look at dota.
1. It's popular, drains a lot of attention.
2. It's good, it's well made, it's well updated, it's loved by the community. Exactly the part they failed on with WC3.
3. It's played using new softwares that didn't exist 3 or 4 years ago. Garena, Listchecker, Hosting bots. All those applications could break Blizzard business model with SC2 if everyone starts playing on LAN with VPN clients instead of "buying" the Battle.net access (or the CD-key, which is the same).
4. It's needed in the future. Just like Counter-Strike gave 10 years to half-life, a good mod can guarantee games sales increasing from 1 year, 1 year and a half to 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, and for a publisher, thats paradise!
