Blizzard attempted to quash fears about the new arena system today by explaining some of its intentions.Speaking on the official forums today, Aratil told WoW players some of the background reasoning behind the new changes. First and foremost, he said, the new system is designed "to address potential abuses under the old system."
He then went on to give a bullet-pointed explanation of the new system. You can read the entire description below:
Judging by comments on various websites, including the responses to Aratil's post, a lot of players are still unconvinced by the new system. However, the Blizzard poster did preempt this somewhat, finishing his post with the grammatically strange idea that "we welcome your feedback and would constantly be striving to make this system even better."
The fact remains, however, that the new matchmaking system has yet to be fully explained. Although Blizzard have given us an insight into its reasoning, we are still none the wiser as to its exact workings.

He then went on to give a bullet-pointed explanation of the new system. You can read the entire description below:
- First and foremost, the primary goal of the new Arena matchmaking system is to match players against opponents of similar skill, regardless of your or your opponents’ team rating. This means that once an estimated skill level is determined, you will more likely be matched against other players of a similar skill level. Please note that the estimated skill level is constantly being evaluated and will adjust based on each team’s continual performance. Ratings that are won or lost also take into account skill level, so that you will not suffer a high penalty if you lose against a team that is much better than their actual team rating.
- Another important aspect of this new Arena matchmaking system is a smaller range of maximum rating that can be won or lost. Because of the differences between how the new system assigns rating points at the end of a match, we are still tweaking rating gain versus loss per match to improve the experience.
- If you were previously ranked with a high skill level and decide to create a new team, it should now be much easier to reach your team’s correct rating. This ensures that players will not feel penalized for moving between teams, and high ranked teams will not feel penalized for trying out new players without much risk to the team rating itself.
- Finally, the core and fundamental reason for the new Arena matchmaking system is for players to participate in Arena games that are fun. We feel that with this new system, higher ranked players will most likely find the challenges that they seek, newer players will no longer feel that Arenas are closed to them, and players will not feel as penalized for trying new things in the Arenas.

been getting 4+ from all my matches and losing 20
and stuck @ 1600 because of it :> (Y) Way the go blizz@@@@@@@
--> gief back old warlocks and old system pls
lol, played on 1900 in 3v3, then rolled a new team, played sth. like 40-1 and found ourselfes on a rating of 1700....
i cant even go above 1650 anymore because if i lose a match i have to win 5 to get back the rating ive lose. used to go 1950+
The main intent of this system is, clearly, to stop chars in blue who have just reached 80 from being steamrolled by people with PVP epics who rerolled for s'n'giggles. Which is good. Will it work? We'll see.
Thanks for the simple version of what was said in the article lol :) I found it very helpfull to understand this new system abit more.
The idea seems good to me, but it requires some "finishing moves" in my opinion.
It sure does stop rating boosting. However the way i understand it, is that every single match that you join the new system will take your match outcome into action of this new system.
So if i've done 400 matches to try improve my skills, then as i get better it will stil remember the outcome of my first fights? So that i will have to do good in alot more matches to make up for all my time improving?
Sorry for the bad explanation, i did how ever try my best.
incase someone hasnt read it or something
Until then we will just have to stick to the fact, that they have to tweak it and configure it to the proper way, before it will work as intended. :)
I wrote to a GM concerning this topic, and as it turns out, Blizzard is not entirely sure themselves, how this rating system works.
So however this turns it out, it will be good, since I don't believe Blizzard, literally want's to piss off a couple millions of their subscribers.
So just wait, chill out and see how it works out.
Yesterday won a match on 1900 got "-1" opponent "-15"
explain this
Me and Lykke played the same amount of games, but his personal rating is higher than the teamrating and mine just keep going down, even if we win a game (wtf?). Sometimes it goes up with like 1 - 5 rating, if we lose it goes down like 20......
personal is a joke ~70 rating difference from team rating
If you lose with people who have worst equipment then you, you will lose a lots of personal points...
Simply Blizzard main forum will blow up after aprox 5 secs posting this thread.
Its something when people do wrong and they do never accept their mistake
