The Kingpins of SK Gaming, Alexander "TheSlaSH" Müller-Rodic and Andreas "bds" Thorstensson, have both posted blogs about their take on the rise and fall of the CGS.As we informed you a few days ago the Championship Gaming Series is dead after they announced on their homepage the immediate cease of all operations.
The CGS believe their concept was "ahead of its time", you can read bds and TheSlaSH's take on this statement.
Alexander "TheSlaSH" Müller-Rodic:
We were already out there, running one of the larger teams with a lot of success and most important, we were actually being sponsored already."

Andreas "bds" Thorstensson:
Why not take advantage of that instead, this would have promoted their own league and would have been much cheaper for them.

"The evaluation of SK Gaming by the CGS management at that time was more or less a joke"
I remember very well, when it came to a showdown between SK and the CGS regarding ourselves becoming a franchise or not. The evaluation of SK Gaming by the CGS management at that time was more or less a joke, cause again, we were no brand to be built. We were already out there, running one of the larger teams with a lot of success and most important, we were actually being sponsored already."

"They tried to re-invent the wheel"
They tried to re-invent the wheel, by creating new brands from scratch when the esport community already had very strong ones. SK, MYM, 3D, coL, mouz, fnatic, wNv (and the list goes on). Why not take advantage of that instead, this would have promoted their own league and would have been much cheaper for them.

Their aim was to make NHL, NBA type of teams / brands so they had to create new brands from scratch. The whole league's idea was to be like a copy of NHL or NBA, but on eSports mode, which sadly didn't work with the selected games. Giving so much money for some random game like CS: Source, which does not have even a community, was their biggest mistake. They handled the marekting side quite well in my opinion.
"The same community you didn't write for months on end?"
Mainly because I started writing for SK-Gaming, so I was @ two organizations at the same time and then after three months decided to leave Cadred and focus on SK more.
It's kind of sad to see that this huge opportunity (CGS as a big platform for merchandising e-sports) disappears because of incredible mismanagement.
CGS's statement really pisses me off cause it was their job to adjust to the demands of the market. That's what marketing is about. The whole strategy was not market-related but intended to force their ideas. Isn't it absurd in a way that coL players didn't even like playing CS:S but had to do it?
By the way Jason Lake is not guiltless regarding Complexitys downfall... and I'm really glad that SK (Alex and Andreas in this case) didn't choose to follow CGS to their ruin.
Well done guys! :) SK-Gamings fans all over the world gotta thank you for your dedication and great management!
If they paid the players maybe $10,000 a year, and the world final was only $100,000, then they wouldn't have financial problems. I know the statement from CGS doesn't say anything about money problems, but I can say that it is 90% sure that, that is why they ceased all operations.
And then again, neglecting a chance like this cause you think you have the powers to reinvent eSports? How dare of CGS to actually try!
I would find it very hard to sit there being a G7 team manager having even offered to provide advice to have to sit and watch this take place knowing the consequences. Regardless of the waste of money, time and effort I strongly agree with bds when he comments that this could be solved with a little co-operation with teams. Sad Sad times :(
Let's forget about that bad experiment they perform... and continue with the real e-sports out of here ^^
