HoT eliminated, Grubby advances to finals

ImageWith a two-nil victory over HoT, Grubby has secured his place in the final and a top three finish at the World Cyber Games for the first time in three years.

The first match between the two was on Secret Valley where a drawn-out street brawl of a match had spectators on the edge of their seats.

Mykhaylo 'HoT' Novopashyn decided to play without an Ancient of War, a strategy which Jae Ho 'Moon' Jang was very successful with in Paris earlier in the year.

HoT missed an opportunity for a tier two harass after Manuel 'GrubbY' Schenkhuizen was able to block his base off with a succession of peons and surround the Demon Hunter, forcing HoT to retreat.

The Ukrainian lost significant influence in the match after Grubby was able to flank him while attempting to creep the North health fountain. This forced HoT to back off and play more defensively, which in turn allowed Grubby to creep freely, leveling his Tauren Chieftain to three.

Grubby's creeping paid off significantly later on in the game when he picked up claws +12 and a tome of experience from a red creep camp.

The two fought just outside of Grubby's base where HoT was able to gain superior positioning and really put the screws to Grubby. An invisibility potion allowed the Demon Hunter to get close enough to mana burn the Tauren Chieftain twice, leaving Grubby mana for only one Shockwave. HoT emerged victorious from this battle, but a series of small battles throughout the match saw Grubby even things up.

Grubby played with caution towards the final stretch of the match. He kept his wits about him, attacking only when called for, which was key to him winning the match. Some glaring mistakes on HoT's part, such as teleporting with only a few of his units, for example, helped Grubby stay in the game.

Game two on Twisted Meadows was a very poor effort on HoT's part. He settled on a Beastmaster first, which wasn't really called for on Twisted Meadows. Grubby was able to continue creeping while ignoring HoT's harassment, where he lost several huntresses to burrow fire, then chased down the Beastmaster and got the kill, despite the Blademaster being on low HP from the previous creep.

It took all of four minutes for the game to slip well beyond HoT's control. The match did last quite a while longer, but there wasn't much opportunity for HoT to bring it back.

Grubby only made one noticeable mistake throughout the game. At one point he seemingly became overexcited causing him to lose a large amount of units while pressing HoT's base, which opened a small window of opportunity for the Night Elf player to seize control, but at this point he was too far behind and wasn't able to capitalize.

Hero kill after hero kill kept HoT on level one and low on resources, to the point where he just couldn't stay in the game.

The first match was anyone's to take, but the second was Grubby's all the way.

Grubby will go on to face Moon tomorrow in the grand final, where Grubby will be fighting for his first big win of the year and second WCG victory, while Moon is not only competing for his first gold medal, but Korea's first too.
