Mexican Raspot's WCG dreams ended by admin mistake?

ImageDiego "Raspot" Echeagaray seems to have been on the receiving end of an admin's blunder. Raspot was eliminated through a three-way tiebreaker which, as it seems, should not have been played at all.

Diego 'Raspot' Echeagaray played six games and won four earning himself a 4-2 ratio. These included wins against Yaraslau 'NightWOlf' Kavetski and Hamish Luke 'Kowi' Parker. Nikita 'Nicker' Pomadov's 5-1 ratio guaranteed him first place and a spot in the playoffs but the second place remained undecided. Two other players had a 4-2 ratio, Kowi and NightWolf.

The situation looked like a classic three-way tie and a tie-breaker was played between the three players; Kowi, NightWolf and Raspot. The first tie-breaker did not bring a winner as the scores were tied 1-1 for all three players. In the second tie-breaker NightWolf was the winner with a 2-0 ratio. This meant that Kowi and Raspot were out of the tournament.

But upon inspection of the rules it seems that the tie-breaker should not actually have been played at all and Raspot should have qualified directly for the play-offs.

The Rules:
First Phase
 A Group Draw, held on Oct 2nd 2008 shall determine the composition of each group.
 Map cycle will be notified on Oct 10th 2008 through the WCG website.
 The host and client for each match will be decided by Referee.
 In the first phase, each player plays one match against each of the other players in the same group, with three points for a win and none for a defeat.
 The league system ranking in each group is determined as follows;
a) greater number of points obtained in all the group matches;
b) greater number of points obtained in the group matches between the players concerned in the tiebreaker;

 Should only two players be tied in their group after applying the above-mentioned rules, a single game rematch shall take place
 Should three or more players be tied in their group after applying the league system ranking rules, another league system group ("rematch group") shall be played among the players concerned.
 Ranking in the "rematch group" shall be determined as follows:
a) greater number of points obtained in all the group matches;
b) greater number of points obtained in the group matches between the players concerned;
c) rematch continues until winner determined;
 The two players coming first and second in each group qualify for the second phase.

"Should three or more players be tied in their group after applying the league system ranking rules, another league system group ("rematch group") shall be played among the players concerned."

In this particular situation three players were tied with a 4-2 ratio so league system ranking rules apply. According to rule a) in bold, the players were tied so rule b) should have been applied to determine if a tie-breaker should be played.

Rule b) stipulates that results against the players not concerned in the tie-breaker be disregarded. In this situation the Mexican player was 2-0 as he defeated both Kowi and NightWolf in the group stage. NightWolf was then behind the Mexican as he had a 1-1 win ratio, and Kowi was third with 0-2.

Should this interpretation of the rules be right, the admins' decision was wrong and the Mexican should have gone through to the play-offs and not NightWolf.

We will try to get a response to the issue first thing tomorrow morning but for now, it is most likely that the World Cyber Games is over for Raspot.
