WCG Day 1 finished - Alternate & mibr out

ImageFour out of eight groups have been completed today at the World Cyber Games 2008 in Cologne, Germany. The biggest upset was probably Alternate getting knocked out, while Made in Brazil was not able to pass the group of death with MYM and eSTRO. Also, the Australian team of Immunity played superbly, advancing to the playoffs with CBTEAM.

The first day has finished and has seen a strong eSTRO in Group C as well as a weak Team Alternate in Group D. The tournament has been running well so far, except for the usual delays that are expected and the WCG messing up their own schedule.

In Group A the favorite, SK Gaming, finished first as expected, beating all of their opponents. NoPression placed second which is surprising as TeG has more international experience than them. In Group B some more surprises took place, as Immunity beat almost everyone except for CBTEAM, placing second behind them. Even though Dignitas were able to pull off a win against CBTEAM, they are knocked out of the tournament, again with close scores and even being tied by points.

Group C was named the group of death by most of the spectators with eSTRO, MYM and Made in Brazil present in it, all of them knowing full well that only two teams could progress to the next stage. eSTRO started big, defeating MYM with 16-2 (19-11 total) and mibr with 18-12 as well as all the other teams in the group, finishing first with six clearly defined victories.

MYM and mibr won most of their matches, except for the eSTRO ones, that they would be expected to win, until the big group match between them arose. Both teams played great but MYM came out on top, beating mibr and knocking them out of the tournament, allowing themselves to advance.

Group D was also exciting with mTw, Alternate and k23. Even though k23 aren't as well known, they have been around for a long time. Alternate had the great honour of playing a World Cyber Games in their home country, Germany, but failed to deliver the results, losing to k23 with 14-16 and to mTw with 12-18, getting knocked out early in the groupstage. mTw finished first, winning all of their matches and going into the playoffs with confidence.

Groups E-H are being played tomorrow starting at 12:00 CET, check out the event page for more information.
