The ESWC Masters of Athens event is by far the craziest Quake 3 tournament this year and it is not even half way over. Player rage videos and unbelievable luck inside. If there was crazy to bet money on this week, then it was most certainly not that Johan 'toxjq' Quick and Anton 'Cooller' Singov would be out of the tournament without even winning a game. Between them, the Swede and the Russian have more titles than all other competitors in the ESWC put together.
And though Toxjq was simply not good enough to beat Magnus 'fox' Olsson and Shane 'rapha' Hendrixson, Cooller is a completely different story. A totally crazy one - the bystanders could not decide which theatric genre it belonged to.
The video above shows the Russian after the second map of his match against Sebastian 'Spart1e1' Siira. His anger with himself is quite justified since, with all respect to the Swedish player, Cooller normally beats such opponents. The double ESWC champion did the same thing at the tournament in San Jose when he lost to Chance 'Chance' Lacina and did not go through because of that.
His only chance to progress to the second group stage was to defeat Alexei 'Cypher' Yanushevsky - an extremely difficult task but certainly doable for someone like Cooller. And he was doing it.
With three minutes to go, he was up by four points and in full control of the match. Then he had a fight with Cypher at one of the Yellow Armors, brought his opponent down to 38 points of health and went to get the Red Armor. At this point, there was no way he could lose the match.
And then... *IT* happened.
This allowed the reigning ESWC champion to turn it all around and take the victory. No wonder the Russian's reaction after he lost the map:
The match sealed the deal for Cooller and he can now officially call 2008 the worst year of his professional gaming career. He took part in three tournaments and managed to finish in the top four in none.
Cooller was not the only player showing some temper, as the Polish player Maciej 'av3k' Krzykowski played a match even crazier than the one described above against Zhibo 'Fan Zhibo' Fan. What those players did in the game cannot be told about, it was that crazy (demo here.
On the third map, the Pole gave up after 7 minutes. If one adds a ton of good matches in the other groups, a conclusion comes that it was one crazy tournament so far.
And the good news is that there's still another day of game play left of it!
