In an interview on the ESL TV stream Fnatic's Patrik "cArn" Sättermon mentioned the lack of skill as one of the reasons why the Swedish team disappointed at the Extreme Masters event in Los Angeles. The winners of last year's Extreme Masters LA tournament, Fnatic were among the main favourites for first place this year. They kept a clean sheet of victories in group play but got a total of six rounds in the playoffs and got sent home by Team EG and GamePlay.
It was clear that they grossly underperformed.
"We havent come up to our normal level here," admitted cArn in front of ESL's cameras. "It was individual skill that was lacking. We didn't get kills and you don't win games if you don't get kills."
The 16-1 defeat to EG in the first round of the playoffs was a shock to Fnatic. Sättermon was not able to explain what went wrong exactly: "I need to settle down and look at the demos," he said. "We had planned a vacation so we have to get back to the drawing board, we need to refresh the aim, refresh the mindsets. We want [it] so much but we can't perform."
The Swede mentioned that the players did not perform well individually but that it was not one single player's fault. He added that lineup changes will not happen.
"I think we have time for revenge in Canada or Dubai. We will stick to this team and do the best for this tournament. More than ten teams play professionally these days and you really need a good day to win a tournament. The smallest things really matter now."
Fnatic's next event will be the Extreme Masters III Global Challenge in Montreal on October 17-19. The Swedes have come back from crises before. Will they shine in Canada?
