4Kings flounder after WCG flop

ImageFour Kings' Finnish Counter Strike 1.6 team has chosen to remove two players, natu and toomi leave.

The Finnish team joined Four Kings (4Kings) at the end of July, a week before their World Cyber Games (WCG) qualifier at the Assembly LAN in Helsinki, Finland.

The decision to remove two players was announced on the team's website where general manager Ian 'javax' Leckey commented on the departures, “it's sad to see toomi and natu leave as they've worked hard for the team since they joined”, but the decision was necessary and would “help fuel the motivation [of the team] ten-fold”.

20-year-old Tomi 'toomi' Lundahn decided that he was unable to dedicate the time needed into playing competitive Counter Strike at this level, according to 4Kings. The removal of 23-year-old Joona'natu' Leppänen was a team decision “on the basis that replacing him would improve their game”. The team's replacements both come from Elukkaveljekset Gaming Club (EGC), who finished fourth at the Finnish WCG qualifier. Otto 'danzer' Dimitrow and Jirka 'jigetus' Ryhti join the the team.

4Kings finished second in their group, losing 4-16 to Soltec on de_nuke in their final group game. natu explained the teams "shocking loss" in a blog on the 4Kings website. He made a number of comments about his young opponents, who "played the game non-stop" and clearly had their "star moment", which resulted in 4Kings being "completely shut down" for half of the game.

The loss meant the team had to face Roccat prematurely, who'd won their group losing only 17 rounds in three matches. The single elimination play-offs were best of three but 4Kings were unable to overcome Roccat and lost in two maps, 14-16 on de_inferno and 11-16 on de_nuke. While the team finished third eventually, with a hard fought 2-1 victory over EGC, 16-5 on de_train, 6-16 on de_nuke and 16-14 on de_inferno, it was scant consolation for the organisation which realistically expected a second place finish. natu explained why the third place play-off was so close, "we were far from playing how we should, both because of our own attitude and their good performance".

While the community generally welcomed 4Kings return to competitive international Counter Strike, a small vocal minority disputed how useful the team would be for the organisation. toomis departure from the squad will reinforce some of the criticism aimed at 4Kings because the player had only recently joined the team, replacing Konsta 'kookas' Kaisla after a poor Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) Masters event under the Excello organisation.

Stuart 'TosspoT' Saw, director of QuadV and Crossfire.nu, was one of those people. He said “clearly 4Kings haven't wasted enough money on CS 1.6 over the past five or six years”. His opinion was shot down by the 4Kings management as being deliberately negative, which he then countered by highlighting the organisations' decline compared to local rivals, Dignitas.

The teams next event is unlikely to be the Asus Summer Open at the end of this month, owing to the fact that the event is “a bit short notice”, according to javax, who also admitted that a decision had yet been finalised. The team have applied to compete in the Electronic Sports League (ESL) Extreme Masters III event at Digital Life in New York City, USA, which runs from the 25-28th of September
