Infamy does not come cheap in eSports but Ruxandra "VBadGirl" Calwell has it in ambundance, was it well-deserved, or is VBadGirl just a victim of a male dominated environment?

Ruxandra Calwell is a 27 year psychology and sociology graduate from Bucharest Romania. In E-Sports she goes by the alias VBadgirl and is the manager of Chinese Warcraft3 team, Wisdom Nerve Victory otherwise known as wNv TeamWork.

After trying to find a "real-life" job she found "it started affecting my job with wNv and my studies so I decided to dropped it for the time being," explained VBadGirl. "Sometimes you have to chose your priorities and wNv and my school was more important."

"I regard it as a full job, just that is voluntary job, but I am serious and committed to it like any other job."
Malystryx: So now you've finished your studies your position as manager at wNv is your only job/source of income?

VBadGirl: Well let me get something straight, I am not paid by wNv, I have no source of income. My dad helps me with some money because my university is quite costly as well I live with my grandmother who lives on a small pension. I need to help her as well with paying bills, food etc.

Maybe it might sound crazy to give up a paid job for one which isn't in my situation, but for me money is not everything, some things are more valuable than money, so it is fine for me.

Malystryx: So wNv is a just a hobby as it were? Do you plan to make it more than a hobby in the future?

VBadGirl: I don't consider the wNv job as a hobby, I don't do it because I get bored in front of PC and I have nothing else better to do.

I regard it as a full job, just that is voluntary job, but I am serious and committed to it like any other job. What the future will hold for me I am not certain, I hope it is more than less.

"My boyfriend or maybe I should say fiancée is Korean and living in Seoul"
Malystryx: How did you get into eSports?

VBadGirl: Before I picked Warcraft3 reign of Chaos up, I was really into Age of Empires. I played that for quite some time. I like the mechanics of RTS games but I felt AOE was too slow paced. I loved the dynamics and the fast speed of the war3 games. How I got so hooked? Well I supposed because I am competitive by nature. I love the adrenaline I get when playing melee maps.

Malystryx: WHat do you do outside eSports, when wNv clan wars are not on the agenda? (hobbies, sports etc...)

VBadGirl: Well when I get the chance I love going out for walks. I love walking in a park listening to music or reading a good book under the shade of a tree in a summer hot day. I enjoy reading a lot and I'm looking forward to being able to do it again soon. I also like to study. I always try to find interesting thing to learn about for example different cultures.

ImageMalystryx: You seem to be very into the Asian culture, would that be fair to say? If i remember correctly you have an Asian partner? What is it about Asia and eSports that excites you?

VBadGirl: Yes, when I think at Asia I am thinking at home. I feel best there. For as long as I can remember I have been interested in Asian culture, Buddhism and meditation. I have a special affiliation with Asia and my heart seems to be drawn to it and its wonders. You are right, my boyfriend or maybe I should say fiancée (since he proposed :p) is Korean and is living in Seoul.

What about Asia excites me, the people!!!, the values, the norms they have, the way they treat one another, the respect they hold, the way they develop the relationships, the ideals, many things I think.

Malystryx: So lets just put your role in wNv under the microscope, what are your daily wNv duties?

VBadGirl: Well what I am doing basically is called human resources in a way. I optimize the performance of the group, I solve eventual arguments if they happen and I find ways to enhance the performance within the group.

I also make sure everybody is happy, if somebody is not then I find out why and take care of it, keeping the players together and ensuring a good communication within the group. I advise them on what they should focus on next time, where they lack, what mistakes they did. I also encourage them if the fail, help them pick it up again, not to lose hope.

Then, it is the orga side, I have the duty to contact the other managers, establish a time which suits both parties, arrange hosts, talk with the admins about eventual problems, requests or simple questions. I sometimes arrange training.

Then I try to take the relationship I have with players one step further. I encourage them to learn and practice English, universal culture, how to handle certain situations in their lives, how to improve as a person and how to approach and solve different matters.

Malystryx: So obviously to improve team spirit communication is vital, how does the communcation work? Do you go via a translator, or do they know any English or do you know any Chinese?

"Sometimes I use a translator for basic words and simple phrases, but most of the time I use English with them."
VBadGirl: Yes, basically communication is extremely important. As for how we work it out, both side do their best. Sometimes I have a friend translating if it is something a little more complicated to talk about, sometimes I use a translator for basic words and simple phrases, but most of the time I use English with them.

I know some Chinese, you pick up a few words now and then over time but I would not go as far as saying that I actually know any Chinese.

Malystryx: So you mentioned when we talked before about Xiaot having the responsibility of watching replays, is that right? Do any other players have specific roles?

VBadGirl: Well he is basically the team captain. He has the most experience in war3 and the other players, as well as myself respect his opinions and his judgement. It is not like everyone has been assigned a specific role.

It is easier to approach him and then him talking to the group rather than having six different chats about the same theme, since they live and train in the same apartment. Talking with him and Kele does the trick usually. xiaOt also helps them with practice so I guess he is best to talk to.

ImageMalystryx: So XiaoT's job is to download replays of the opponents and inform his team-mates? Does he decide the line-up for clan wars?

VBadGirl: No, no it's not like that. I do that. I collect all the information, I myself document the next team we need to play, the strategies they might be using,. As well as the strength and weaknesses the team players have, the possible line up they might be using and what would be best to counter them. Xiaot does not decides the line-ups.

It is not like there one person who has the last word on it. It's not a matter of power and who holds it. It's a matter of working together the best possible way and succeeding together.

You need to be flexible sometimes even you might think a X player would be best on a certain map. Maybe lately he has been getting practice and focusing on another map so he is more confident playing that one, rather than the one you had in mind. This is an example of what I said before, communication is vital. You need to know at all times what they are up to.

"That statement was mainly for them to prove me wrong, to show me what a 'bad' person I am. "
Malystryx: Well you mentioned success, you've qualified for the WC3L via the winner bracket, how were the qualifiers? I saw a rather "heated" statement by Rotterdam...

VBadGirl: Well it got harder before getting easier. Every CW has it's challenges, we came fully prepared for each match and we never underestimated them no matter which type of players they had in their team.

The thing with SRS was because of an incident we had with them llast WC3L qualifers, where the players + manager + admin showed a bad mannered attitude towards me and my players.

I did not want to experience that again, it was pretty nasty so I used this as trick. That statement was mainly for them to prove me wrong, to show me what a 'bad' person I am.

The fact is it worked wonders and the clan war was incredibly mannered, peaceful and stress free, showed me my plan worked quite well. Perhaps the method was a little unconventional but hey! I'm not exactly the conventional type of person you usually meet. Reverse psychology is its scientific terminology.

ImageMalystryx: Well you're unconventionality has perhaps brought you more bad than good, how do you view your infamous "reputation"?

For example you've been called "VBadOrga" or "the worst orga in WC3 history" by the public in the past, is it justified in your opinion?

VBadGirl: If I would care about what every single person thinks about me I would started living a life which is not mine. People nowadays just need reasons to hate, now it's me, two mins later it is NE imba, next two mins is HU towers and lame strategies.

People need things to constantly cry and bitch about. As for the names I was called they affect me. I find it amusing in a way.

Everybody is free to say what they want and to have an opinion. What I think about being right or wrong is not relevant, in my opinion. I do my job the best I can with my best abilities and i know whan I go to bed I am happy about it.

Just think about it, if I did not do my job right would I have been with wNv for so long? How long was it, 9, maybe 10 months? People have a hard time dealing with other people's success and the fact that I am a girl didn't help either.

The general bias and the way to gain respect is much harder due to gender difference. If you dare to have an opinion, right or wrong, they do not respect it, they flame you directly and eventually add a very smart remark like "go make me a sandwich" or whatever they think is cool at the moment.

"People nowadays just need reasons to hate, now it's me, two mins later it is NE imba, next two mins it is HU towers and lame strategies."
Malystryx:In life would you describe yourself as an easy or difficult character to get on with? Are you a sheep or a sheperd?

VBadGirl:Well, people who got the chance to know me a little bit do not have any problems getting along with me. I am open, not particualrly judgmental and I always try to help them if they meet problems. I am not a sheep I rather like the leading role but it depends what we are talking about.

In a relationship for example I believe there is not a ruler, I think, it's not about power and nobody has to prove any superiority. Best is to try to accept one another, respect and if we have difficulties to try to solve it together maturely without any ego involved.

Malystryx:Do you try to be controversial or "hated"? Do you do it on purpose to get people angry or worked up, or does it happen by accident?

VBadGirl:Well to tell you the truth, I am having fun most of the time. I absolutely hate human stupidity. Like Einstein said: "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity". It is funny to see how much passion and hatred some people have towards others.

They try to degrade , humiliate and bring down other people just because they are too narrow minded and can not think outside the box. Because they can not deal with their own frustrations. I have seen people flaming me and acting like they know EVERYTHING about me and I have absolutely no idea who they are.

These people never spoke to me and they created this impression based on what other people said or heard about me. Slaves, sheep without personal reflexion, personal opinion or strength.

ImageMalystryx:Do you receive more love mail or more hate mail? Have you ever had any crazy admirers or extreme e-stalkers?

VBadGirl:Love mail, because those who e-mail me are those who know me. I never received any hate mail so far. I have always tried to be kind and nice to people who had questions or something to tell me. I have never turned anybody down.

Yes I have many crazy admires haha and yes I have extreme e-stalkers as well. Unless they insult me I tolerate them. As I said I have a lot of compassion and I am understanding. If they happen to cross the line I warn them and then ban them. I don't put up with any body's garbage, life is hard enough.

Malystryx: What about the reputation caused by the dodgy Chinese internet, have you sorted out those kind of problems now?

VBadGirl:I cannot say we have sorted it out 100% but the situation is getting much better. The connection the boss got for them now is much more stable than the previous one was. Also it takes time to discover which hosts are best for the players.

We've tried so many I forgot some of their names. Also it was my fault in a way they had to play on so many unsuitable hosts and I am really sorry about it. I was not strong enough and demanding enough when choosing the method and the way in which we were going to play the CW.

"Yes I have many crazy admirers, and yes I have extreme e-stalkers as well. Unless they insult me I tolerate them"
Malystryx: So they do not have to worry about meals.. let us imagine is it a sit round the dinner table type of ordeal, or is it a snacky food they can chew on while playing?

No, finally somebody cooks for them. I think good healthy eating habb
its are also pretty important, for health most of all. A healthy mind in a healthy body. I'm glad that Andy decided to do this for them rather than letting them to order some junk food and eating crap.
Malystryx: So was it perhaps TH000 who ate the most "crap" before, is that why he's suddenly become so good winning PGL Season 3?

VBadGirl: Th000 due his practice times has some weird feeding habbits and irregular meals but what made a difference i dont think was some gosu kimchi (like MYM had an article) or scooby snacks but something else.

Malystryx: Which was? Some top of the range women trouble advice or something else?

VBadGirl: Well I suppose he needed somebody to support him when he lost and won not just when he won, somebody to understand him and be there for him, to believe in him, encourage him,, motivate him and keep telling him NEVER give up, no matter what, always fight!

ImageMalystryx: So you are the key to his success then?

VBadGirl:hmmm I would not go as far as saying that. He was the one who worked hard to achive his dream but perhaps my, as well as the entire team's, constant support and belief in him helped him also.
We are like family, one for all and all for one. We get along really well and we are close to one another, our friendship goes beyond the game.

Malystryx: Have you not contemplated going to live in the house? Or would a female perhaps distract them from their micro?

VBadGirl:I have and I plan doing so in the near future. I could not do so yet because of my studies but since I have finished this summer I will go stay with them after the Olympics. I'm really looking forward to do that and they are as well! It is not not like they never seen a female apart from porn and that they freak out if I were to be around.

"There are two types of people, the one who loves me and one who can go fuck themselves, haha."
Malystryx:What did you make of TH000's run in the PGL, did you and the team follow his games closely? Which games were you must impressed with?

VBadGirl:I woke up even at 5 am if I had to or slept just 4 hours just to see his games and xiaOt's ones. I was most impressed with xiaOt's game vs ToD in early stages and also with TH000 last game vs Moon. He managed to prove that he is a strong player who can beat Moon even if the power cuts off, without towers and tanks, just pure MK style which made him ultimately so famous.

Malystryx:So what does the next few months hold for you and wNv?

VBadGirl:More lan events, Ceg, cig, eswc, IEF etc, + wc3l + ngl. Busy agenda as usual. The rhythm is quite insane nowadays. We will do our best to become even better, stronger. There is always room for improvement and we will try not to not disspoint our fans and hopefully attract some new ones.

Malystryx:Any shoutouts to fans or VBadGirl haters?

VBadGirl:I have a word taken form a friend of mineThere are two types of people, the one who loves me and one who can go fuck themselves hahaha.
