Who will come out on top of WC3L Finals?

ImageWC3L, one of the most prestigious leagues in the Warcraft III universe, is on the verge of arranging the offline finals for the tenth time. Which of SK Gaming, Mousesports, World Elite and Meet Your Makers will sit on the Frozen Throne?

All eyes will fall on the provincial capital Changsha, China in two days from June 15 to 16, not for its beautiful landscape or long history, but for the WC3L Season XIII Finals. From the fourth season onwards the WC3L culminated with offline finals in European cities. This is the first time WC3L goes to China.

The Big Four

SK Gaming, Mousesports, World Elite and Meet Your Makers are more than familiar to the WC3L offline finals. They have occupied three spots in every offline final in the past five seasons. Mousesports are the only team who has yet to reign supreme in WC3L history among the big four, whilst SK Gaming, World Elite and Meet Your Makers have each collected the championship title once in the past three years.

SK Gaming retained the WC3L title last season after a nine-season wait and it was also the first time they won the championship offline. Going into the campaign this season as the defending champion, SK had a tremendous start with three straight clean sheets. In spite of conceding two close defeats to Beijing E-sports Team and WICKED Esports, SK topped the table with a five-point lead over the second place.

While most of the praise may go to June “Lyn” Park who enjoyed a successful season and was one of two undefeated players alongside Xuwen “infi” Wang of World Elite, Seong Deok “SoJu” Lee proved to be the biggest contender of Most Valuable Player this season. He has won 80% of his solo games and collected nine points together with Sung Sik “ReMinD” Kim. The Koreans have won two previous WC3L trophies and they will be trying to make it three times in a row for the first time in WC3L histroy.

ToD + SaSe 0/1
Fly100% + Happy 5/1
Happy + SaSe 1/2

Mousesports entered the finals though the back door to replace the second placed Beijing E-sports Team. BeT are currently reconstructing their squad and Wicked Esports, fifth in the regular season, gave up their spot after disbanding their WC3 team.

The team is bolstered with couple of talented young lads such as Fly100% and Happy and they are strengthened with the experienced ToD this season, but they have been shaky throughout the regular season. Their solo performance seem to be a little bit over mediocre, with ToD winning eight games out of ten and Fly100% trailing behind with merely 60% win ratio. They have tried out four 2on2 alternatives in the regular season and it seems it works best with Fly100% and Happy.

However, the Russian elite’s absence in Finals will reduce the choices in their hands and force them to run a new 2v2 team. Another drawback for the “Germans” is that they excluded their long-time serving member SaSe, who had the second best solo stats in their squad during regular season, right before the finals. This further decreases their possibility of producing any major breakthrough.

Position last season: 2nd
Position in regular season: 4th (35 Points, 7/4)

Moon 4/3
Storm 1/0
Susiria 5/2

Lucifer + Susiria 5/2
Grubby + Moon 2/0

Meet Your Makers are one of the best teams, if not the best, in the WC3L history and they have claimed the second place four times in the past six seasons. They did not begin their campaign this season with convincing performances and lost all their matches against the other four top-tier teams. However, they picked up enough points from the teams at the wrong end of the table and slot themselves a passage to the Finals.

After being named MVP and lifting the trophy several times with Four Kings, Grubby has become a key player for the Danish organization shortly after his arrival. The player took part in almost every clan war this season and his solid performance always makes their match easier. Despite stats of the other players does not seem to be as impressive as the Dutchman, as their manager Losemann said in a recent interview, every one of them could become a beast when it comes down to offline final.

WE’s player stats:
"The Chinese elites will be itching to claim themselves the true champions on home soil."

Sky 10/1

TED 8/2

Like + TED 4/7

Finishing third last season, World Elite began to use pure Chinese squad this season after losing ReiGn to SK Gaming. Many had put their future into doubt after witnessing their 0-5 defeat to SK Gaming and even predicted they were among the favourites to relegate from WC3L after the conclusion of the regular season. The outcome? They have as many clanwars as the first placed SK Gaming do and cruised to the offline final after a 3-0 victory over former WICKED eSports in the playoffs.

The Chinese elites have not only dominated the Road of the King in May, but their players also had magnificent performances in various individual tournaments. With their desire to claim themselves the true champion, as their previous trophy won largely due to currently SK’s Korean quartet, and playing at home soil, they are itching to put their hands on the trophy once again.

The curtain raiser: Mousesports vs. World Elite

"Mousesports will have a hard time ahead of them if they fail in 2v2 and sound players like infi, Sky, TED and Like are waiting ahead."
The clash between Mousesports and World Elite will kick off the day at 04:00 CET on Sunday. While the game has not yet started, the stats are already stacked in favor of the Chinese.

The Season XI champion have won the latest three encounters against Mousesports and they surpassed their opponent in the same round with a 4-1 victory the last time they met in offline finals.

One of the key factors that points a team to success in WC3L is 2v2. With a clanwar consisting five games, you will have to win three solo games out of four to get the better of your opponent. One of World Elite’s major weaknesses, as World Elite manager HoTLiPs said in an interview with myPGL.com, is their 2v2.

Their Like/TED combo was playing a bit below bar during the regular season, but their usage of the infi/Sky combo against WICKED eSports in the playoffs as well as the Road of the King tournament may signal a change in the opener.

Their opposite number do not look promising either without the solid 2v2 combo of Fly100%/Happy. Mousesports will have a hard time ahead of them if they fail in 2v2 and sound players like infi, Sky, TED and Like are waiting ahead.

The SK vs. MYM thing

"Given either side has two favourite solo maps and 2v2 may end up either way, the match will most probably end up 3:2 either way as the same as in the past five occasions."
SK Gaming and Meet Your Makers have been long time rivals, yet the players are good friends.

Though SK Gaming have lost most of the recent encounters to Meet Your Makers in the NGL format, they are on a four-game winning streak against the devils in WC3L format.

Meet Your Makers have opted for the Grubby/Moon combination since the late stage of online season.

The pair that established themselves among the greatest players in the WC3 history demonstrated that they are also capable in the 2v2 game and are undefeated so far. They will face a tough test when they meet ReMinD/SoJu of SK Gaming, one of the top class 2v2 formulas around the world. Will 1 + 1 > 2?

Regarding to the four solo games, the starting maps are quite fair for both. Meet Your Makers have impressive results at Turtle Rock, which they tend to seed their Undead duo, and at Echo Isles, which they have no regular starter.

On the other hand, SK Gaming have a perfect sheet at Gnoll Wood, as which many can tell, the home of Lyn, and at Secret Valley. Given either side has two favourite solo maps and 2v2 may end up either way, the match will most probably end up 3:2 either way as the same as in the past five occasions.
