Here comes the second installment of the interview with the President of the AGP, Jarod Reisin. In it, he talks to SK Gaming about the specifics of the tour of events that he plans to organise in 2009. Should his plans come to fruition, it would be a major revival for 1v1 FPS games. In the first part of the interview we talked about how and why deathmatch games were phased out of competitive gaming and whether or not they can come back big time.
Reisin believes so. This time, we talk about the details of how the comeback is schemed.
Why the idea that you have to play different games in the tour?
Three major reasons: unity, variety and evolution. We are aware many will not like this format. It will even sacrifice some top players as they will not want to play more than their favored game. We are also aware fans will sometimes not want to watch other games they don't love.
We will forever have the fighting about everyone's preferred game and how it is better or more skilled. Well, now it will be put on a pedestal and the fans will have a lot to talk about and watch. This in some ways will unite the communities. FPS 1v1 has some great communities, positive and negative. They all will now finally have a place to really see the encompassing of the entire FPS 1v1 sport in itself. Unity is everything. This format should allow a good percentage of each games fan base to unite. Yes, I know the QW fans and Q2 fans, and all of the UT's prior to 3 among the tons of other potential games will not be satisfied. But we cannot have a tour of 20 games.
These games we chose will also present variety. As they all use different play styles in addition to the basis of FPS 1v1, each is on a different engine and each not only looks different, but plays different. Different guns, different armor systems, and different pro players for each. Variety is very important to what we are doing and will provide many different opportunities for fans to enjoy.
Evolution is also very important. There are always new games coming out. That means new players, new communities, and rifts int he entire FPS 1v1 sport. With a four game structure, as new games come out or old games become to redundant or not good enough, the players will be allowed, through the Association of Gaming Professionals, to propose a new game and vote it into replacement of a current game.
This way, the AGP Tour grows and the major change is one game, as opposed to the entire Tour. This will keep the top players and allow continual growth forever.
It was a tough decision. In all honesty, Quake 4 had amazing matches throughout its career. Especially last year. Toxic was a beast obviously, yet [Maciej] Av3k [Krzykowski] became a major rival and those matches were amazing.
But, if you saw right below these players, you would see one of the most competitive and dramatic skill sets I have witnessed in FPS 1v1 since forever ago. There were up towards 10 players equal in skill, fighting it out in amazing matches. There were upsets, there were close games, there were up and comers out of nowhere, and there were heavy rivalries and great action.
This is very important to us as well as the fact it is the most recent FPS 1v1 that was played by top players. Id Software and Q4Max did an amazing job at fixing all of the games problems and in the end it was a great competition game that could look great. We believe the communities under the pro skill set will grow with the AGP Tour and a lot of people's opinion of the game is based on early Quake 4 and not 1.3 patch and on. Nonetheless, the game caters to what we need for the 2009 AGP Tour in terms of these great matches and great player personalities.
UT3 has problems as we all know but the game looks amazing. And it plays faster than prior UT's. I am hoping the modders can fulfill certain expectations we have of this game if Epic does not. A recent match I watched on QuadV was great to watch minus the spectator problems. We debated using a previous Unreal but that community in itself is so split we decided to go with the new as a starting point.
As time goes by, if UT3 remains, hardware will become cheaper and many biases will end and they will get the full experience of the game... we hope.
Even if the player communities are small on such games, we believe FPS 1v1 fans will still appreciate watching these games in action played by the top professional players and love it.
How are you going to convince players to participate in all seasons? The AGP is in danger of having to build up new stars each season because not everyone will want to switch.
That lies in the ranking points. So far, the only way a player will gain entry into the Majors is by qualifying through points. If the player does not have a high enough ranking, they will not be able to participate. Players will not be able to train all year to play in one Major. They will have to play in other tourneys and sanctioned AGP Tour events to gain the points in order to compete in the Majors.
Lower ranking players will have the ability to play in the AGP Circuits for small prize purses no matter what, though. So those who want to stay with only one game will have tourneys to play in.
Will there be enough prize money to entice someone like Toxic to play games he does not like so much?
Yes. I cannot give details on it until announced, but we believe our first year prize purse will be more than satisfactory as well as planned payout to top 16 for our Majors alone. Add in the all of the potential Elitist Series tournaments and players should be very happy.
Who's backing AGP? Where's the money going to be coming from?
We will have all announcements pertaining to sponsorships and partnerships soon.
How are you going to cope with the problem that a Quake 3 ESWC will be held in the middle of your Warsow season?
The seasons are not in order yet. We are making decisions on seasons based on these other events. Of course tournaments like ESWC have not been consistent in even having an FPS 1v1, yet it is great they are this year.
We will be in talks with other event organizers as such overlapping of games must be avoided. We are hoping the AGP Elitist Series can possibly work with an event such as ESWC and QuakeCon to include the ranking points gained and players having more opportunities to compete at the highest level. Thus maintaining the entire focused AGP Tour and its growth. We would love to have a tournament in every pro gaming event.
What about the locations?
The locations are being decided on currently. Expect announcements in the times to come. So everyone does know, this is an international tour in every way, we are planning to have at least two Majors in Europe, possibly three, and one or two in North America.
We would love to have one in Australia as well but that depends on alot of factors. The continual growth of the AGP Tour and its fan bases will likely contribute to such future decisions in creating stationed Majors that remain in a certain country and city every year. Australian Open anyone?
For the Majors, expect a high quality production, focusing on the players and the in game action. We are planning on doing a lot for the games themselves for the viewers and production, which will be announced soon as well and everyone will love it. We will have an amazing website that will stream in every match with statistics, player pages, and easy access to every match.
And in between the Majors we hope to have a lot of tournaments present in the AGP Elitist Series that will be as great as the Majors themselves.
The AGP Tour will bring the viewers of the world their beloved FPS 1v1 games and players together to rejoice in the carnage only these games provide. The goal is simple: to present the professional sport of FPS 1v1 in the best way possible to as many as possible as enjoyable as possible. We want the players happy and we want them to feel safe in knowing this is the real thing and will continually grow year after year.
We are all in this together. Our survival is based on the fans and they will never be ignored or let down again.

What FPS 1v1 gaming has not had is unity. Be it player or communities or both, this is something that has hurt FPS 1v1 for ages. Using four games will give a lot (not all, of course) of the communites something to watch and follow. Their favorite players will succeed in their respected seasons and they will have something to look forward to, even if for one of the four seasons of the year. And their favorite players might do well in other games as well.We will forever have the fighting about everyone's preferred game and how it is better or more skilled. Well, now it will be put on a pedestal and the fans will have a lot to talk about and watch. This in some ways will unite the communities. FPS 1v1 has some great communities, positive and negative. "This is a full on professional tour in the likes of pro golf, tennis, you name it. It is not going to be a cake ride for players. But then again, neither is any pro sport."
Why support "PainKillers", though? Games lilke UT3 or Quake 4 that don't have big communities unless there is money poured into them.It was a tough decision. In all honesty, Quake 4 had amazing matches throughout its career. Especially last year. Toxic was a beast obviously, yet [Maciej] Av3k [Krzykowski] became a major rival and those matches were amazing.

The Elitist Series will probably be more open to anyone, but that is being discussed now so I cannot say much until we announce it. Basically, the player will need to switch if they are to participate. This isn't just sign up and play like past tournaments. This is a full on professional tour in the likes of pro golf, tennis, you name it. It is not going to be a cake ride for players. But then again, neither is any pro sport.Lower ranking players will have the ability to play in the AGP Circuits for small prize purses no matter what, though. Also, with a varied calendar of events, it is impossible to avoid conflicting schedules with two different major games being played at big tournaments.
rather in CPM
I don't see any universal game for 1on1-matches, as the duel-community has always been very loyal to their "own" game. For christ sake, there is still people playing QW, so how would one pick out a single game?
(version/players/map)
I love Q3, but come on... it's been few years.
What the guy is talking about ? There always have been a 1v1 FPS game at the ESWC. There was even 3 in 2004 ...
The main idea is interesting by the way, it's sure that big prizes will be needed to get the best players to play in all games, but well, if somebody doing it well in all games, that player could be very close to beat the "12 titles in 5 different games" record of Fatal1ty in a few seasons...maybe that's why it's limited to 4 games... :)
The point system will play an important part. Anyways the idea is good to be tried, so I wish you the best of luck!
i mean, don't get me wrong- there really WERE some great games for Quake 4 over the past year or so, just seems like somewhat of a step backwards... then again, look at ESWC and the choice of Quake 3- and that's gone down pretty well!
i'm pretty surprised Carmac didn't quiz him more on the choice of Warsow. I mean as a Warsow player myself, i'm over the moon for it to be picked, but just interested to know his reasons for picking this over other more 'established games' (qw,q2,pk... severity!? :D)- especially considering Warsow is still in beta... apparently :D.
fuck knows why
Why not:
"[Johan] Toxic [Quick] was a beast obviously, yet [Maciej] Av3k [Krzykowski]"?
- Not with this setup"
im sure thet u wont to help but playing 4 games for most players is stup*d
