Everything fades to black

ImageI don't often attend events, I'm cursed you see, nothing good ever comes from me attending an event. It's possibly just bad luck, but luck is fickle and to have bad luck suggests you at least had good luck, once, else how would you know how bad it was?

The Championship Gaming Series (CGS) event is no different, well that's a lie, the CGS and Omega Sektor is chalk and cheese compared to Multiplay hosting the World Cyber Games (WCG) UK qualifier at the Newbury racecourse.

After a day spent in Omega Sektor I can safely say that it's the best LAN centre I've ever attended, and I'm quite sure from the gamers perspective things which could be improved are few and far between.

Though the weather is out of their control, the air conditioning wasn't. The lighting is a serious issue, there's only one room where any natural light streams in and it wasn't been used by the CGS.

After hours spent in an LSD inspired cocoon, you feel drained. The heat was uncomfortable because it wasn't 'proper heat', it was a moist clammy heat which clung to you, parched your mouth and no doubt would've sent you to sleep given the chance. No matter how much you moved from area to area, you felt dirty, but it's something you've to endure, and you're very conscious of it.

The initial feeling from everyone was that there was a lack of organisational skills on one level or another. I spoke to one Omega Sektor employee who was minding one of the areas not used by the CGS, again another case of misinformation. 'I was lead to believe that the CGS hired the entire event', I questioned. The employee laughed, I think I proved his point, 'it's a joke' he replied.

The actual event was well staffed on both sides however, the Omega Sektor staff where friendly and welcoming, on one of the few occasions where I did have to speak to one of the low level CGS staff, I was left more confused than when I first asked any questions.

I'm curious though, why do events and organisations despite their fundamental differences still suffer the same problems. There are apparently players from the first season (almost certainly the ones who weren't redrafted this season I imagine, that would be an educated guess for those who're wanting to snoop further for names) of the CGS disputing finical issues.

I'm beginning to appreciate the overwhelming amount of effort it takes to organise events of this scale, even bad events need a mind numbing amount of time and effort, and what marks a good and bad event from the crowd is generally the gamers attitude, behavior and performance anyway.

Though the heat and initial schedule issues remain an annoyance, as did the broken microphone which cracked and boomed throughout the second floor regularly, as well as the lack of wireless internet for the duration of the day. I'm willing to overlook such 'minor' issues since I'm being as objective as I can, or at least trying to be.

The gulf within gaming, the animosity, the bickering and favoritism boils just below the surface. There's serious business being conducted on every PC and console, behind every door there's someone striking a deal. Whether it's one of Johnathan 'Fatal1ty' Wendel's business associates offering to 'sort anything you need' for Emil 'HeatoN' Christenson or one of the external pr guys ensuring the press are left with no allusions that this is the best thing since sliced bread, there's a slighty sinister edge to everything.

I believe the gamers honestly feel that the general managers are largely looking for reasons not to pick potential stars, as if skill isn't the largest factor in the equation.

Despite the obvious artificiality of the CGS, most of it is purely to heighten the excitement and appeal of 'the show', the actual reality is far more punctual. The general managers have to submit their list selected players by 1pm this afternoon.

The organisers have kept on top of the admins and told them to be brutal with time keeping, it's the reason why the event finished at 8pm, only an hour later than it was supposed to and had no one had to wait for the initial few early morning hours, I guess most would consider this the best event they ever attended.

The second day is under way...
