Game play analysis of UnTeD

ImageThe Road of the King turned out to be the stage for rise of the new Undead phenomenon Zhuo "TED" Zeng of World Elite. He won thirteen out of sixteen games against various world class players like Manuel "Grubby" Schenkhuizen, Jae Ho "Moon" Jang and June "Lyn" Park. This article is an analysis of TeD's in-game style.

From what I’ve seen in his games, he is pretty cautious and make a point of detail. I used to think he was not explosive, but now he is both cautious and explosive which makes him the player to be reckoned with.

Part I: Defence in an Undead mirror game
The article was originally written by a Replays.net forum member. TED himself agreed with it to a large extent.

When you use a Fiend strategy against a Ghoul strategy, the first thing you have to do is defense. The Ghoul user usually has the initiative against a Fiend user in two periods: both times the Fiend user upgrades his main base. These are the best opportunities for a Ghoul user to kill his opponent’s Acolytes. If he fails to achieve that, he loses the initiative in game.

In other words, the Ghoul user will try to kill as many Acolytes as he can with the Lich and Ghouls in early and mid game and push his opponent when his Lich buys the Orb of Corruption. If he fails to kill some Acolytes, the initiative goes to the Fiend user.

ImageTED defended exceptionally well in most cases during this tournament. He either builds the altar first, which enables his Death Knight to come out much earlier and follows his opponent everywhere, or goes with the most common fiend start which enables Fiends to come out earlier and upgrades one Nerubian Tower and one Spirit Tower in the meantime.

Furthermore, his building organization in base is something we should learn from. A Fiend user will creep much faster since mid game and the Fiend plus Wyrm combo is more efficient than Ghoul plus Gargoyle combo. Because Gargoyle is melee against air units while Fiend can bring them down with the help of the web and Fiend user can therefore make good use of hit and run tactic.

Part II: The power of technology
Both Jae Wook "Lucifer" Noh and Sung Hyun "Space" Park used the Fiend strategy against TED in RotK, however, they played in a mechanical way. Though TED’s Lich came out a bit later than the ones of those two opponents, he had the Orb of Corruption right away. Even though Lucifer and Space seemed to have an advantage by that time, they had to dodge TED when they saw his Lich. TED could hence creep as much as he wanted. Usually either a Mana Potion or a Healing Potion from a creep will decide the game. Moreover, TED could summon a Dark Ranger, who is a decisive hero in a mirror game, before his opponent was able to.

TED encountered Seo Woo "ReiGn" Kang, who is also good at Undead mirror match, in the final. ReiGn played pretty well in early and mid game and seemed to have the game in his hand, but TED proved superior in mirror game and TED won with the Banshee plus Fiend combo.

Part III: Protection of the hero
ImageTED protected his second and third hero carefully in his game against ReiGn. Even some skilled Undead players do not make a point of protecting their heroes.

Rather than giving a Scroll of Town Portal and Potion of Lesser Invulnerability to the Death Knight and Lich respectively, many players give Death Knight both items whilst the Lich has none.

All of TED’s heroes had a Potion of Lesser Invulnerability in the last fight of his game against ReiGn, while only one of ReiGn’s heroes had Potion of Lesser Invulnerability.

Part IV: Strategy against NE
TED did not go with the popular Ghoul plus Gargoyle combo against Moon, Sung Sik "ReMinD" Kim or Seong Deok "SoJu" Lee, three of Korea's top Night Elves, but he made Ghoul first and then Fiend, and later on pushed with triple heroes.

Lots of people wonder why Moon lost so badly and did not seem to be playing like himself. This is due to his mindset in this match-up. Moon has played many of games against the Ghoul plus Gargoyle combo so he is used to going with the Demon Hunter and later on the Naga Sea Witch, expand in tier 2 and go mass dryads with mercs.

This is, of course, very efficient against the Ghoul plus Gargoyle combo. However, TED’s strategy against Moon was the perfect counter. Dryads can pin down Gargoyles efficiently, but they are too vulnerable when they face fiends and two long-ranged heroes. Moon’s heroes did not dare to move closer either since TED had both the Lich and the Naga who could slow him.

Regarding TED's loss to SoJu, SoJu’s Pandaren Brewmaster leveled up to 3 successfully, which appeared to be crucial. Though TED killed SoJu’s heroes many times, the cost was too much to afford.

Part V: Strategy against Orc
TED has different starts on different maps. He goes fast Death Knight and harass on large maps and fast Fiend on both small and medium maps.

He was also cautious when he crept in his games against Hyo Sub "FoCuS" Eom and Min Hyuk "MinHyuk" Jo. Take his game versus MinHyuk on Twisted Meadows as an example. TED lured the creeps at the mercenary market to the narrow down the path nearby. Orc’s melee units would therefore not creepjack him so easily. The same happened in his game versus Lyn too.

The second thing is to make a counter to your opponent’s units. TED’s Obsidian Statue upgraded to a Destroyer right after he saw Lyn’s Spirit Walker. It maximized the power of the Destroyer while the Spirit Walker became useless.

The third is the change of pace. Lyn executed his strategy well in the early game of the first match. However, he was a bit overconfident in mid game. He opened a fight with TED while his Shadow Hunter was only level 2. Conversely, TED’s battle array was well organized. TED capitalised on that fight and won the game in the end.

Learning from the first game, Lyn planed to level his Shadow Hunter up and then opened a fight with TED. But TED changed his pace from the first game. He made the Lich earlier as well as a Slaughter House and pushed Lyn earlier. Lyn failed to gain an army of good quality as well as high level triple heroes.
