Road of the King, one of the most interesting Warcraft 3 team tournaments of the year, will have its final tomorrow. The World Elite vs. SK Gaming final will have an interesting subtext - the best of China will meet the best of Korea.Long gone are the days when Europe could boast more than three world class Warcraft 3 players. The world belongs to the Asians and the RotK final will tell us whether it is China or Korea that has got the best players. Those will not be just two teams colliding - it is much more than that.
Another poignant point to the match is that some fans could say this is a match between the old and the new World Elite. After all, SK Gaming's Korean players all represented WE, and with great success too.
The Chinese team and SK's Korean team were clearly the strongest in the entire tournament, but haven't met each other so far. Thus, even though best of nine is a very long distance to play on, it is difficult to predict the winner. Victory may depend on which players meet each other and the smart use of cards to turn things around.
WORLD ELITE
World Elite has really been on form in this tournament. The closest they got to being defeated was in their group game against Fnatic (4-3). They lost a total of four maps in their other matches against Colorful, BeT and Meet Your Makers. They are a team to be feared, as Xuwen "Infi" Wang and XiaoFeng "Sky" Li are in good shape and they have a real beast in Zhuo "TeD" Zeng who single-handedly sent MYM home in the semi final.
It could easily be argued that their group was the easier one in the tournament and that TeD's semi final all kill is only an indication of what he and not the rest of the team can do. But even if this is the case, no one can doubt the prowess of WE's Chinese team.
Frightening may be the statistic Undead players have got against Night Elves in the tournament - a 100% win ratio (on four maps). Considering that two of SK's main men are NE players, the Koreans may want to make good use of their cards to stop the UnTeD.
WE's player stats (win/loss):
Infi 4/0
Like 2/2
suh0 0/2
Sky 2/0
TeD 9/2
Infi + Sky 2/2
WE's cards used:
2 mirror image (change solo game to 2on2)
1 phrase shift (change their player in the next game to another one)
1 split (change next game to best of three instead of best of one)
WE's road to the final:
4:3 vs. Fnatic
4:1 vs. BeT
4:1 vs. Colorful
5:2 vs. MYM
SK GAMING:
SK Gaming got off to a pretty bad start in the tournament with a painful defeat to arch rivals MYM, Manuel "Grubby" Schenkhuizen defeating three of SK's players when it seemed to be over. But in the long run, the overall strength of SK's squad, where each player could carry the entire game on his shoulders, brought them the playoffs.
Each of SK's players has delivered points for the team and the Sung Sik "ReMinD" Kim and Seong Deok "SoJu" Lee duo proved to be unstoppable so far. Including the 2on2 games, SoJu brought SK Gaming seven out of seventeen points won in the tournament and only lost once.
The other players, perhaps with the exception of Seo Woo "ReiGn" Kim, were not as prolific. But knowing their ability, they could wake up at any moment and deliver a killing blow when it counts most.
SK's player stats (win/loss):
Lyn 3/4
ReMinD 2/4
ReiGn 5/2
SoJu 5/1
ReMinD + SoJu 2/0
SK's cards used:
3 phrase shift (change their player in the next game to another one)
1 mirror image (change solo game to 2on2)
SK's road to the final:
3:4 vs. MYM
4:2 vs. Mouz
4:1 vs. wNv
5:3 vs. Fnatic
Both teams have their sights set on the crown, but the Road of the King will lead only one of them to it. The showdown begins at 7:00am CET. Follow it right here.
