A coalition of StarCraft sites has found an almost full proof method of finding hackers in the game. Nine cheaters have been banned from the most prestigious competitions.
The new method of spotting maphackers who use Oblivion program was invented by Flag from TeamLiquid. Five sites: WGTour.com, TeamLiquid.net, Gosugamers.net, SCLegacy.com and Iccup.com have joined the "hunt for maphackers" and found nine players to be guilty.
The method is pretty simple and works based on the studying of a replay and how a map hack covers the map hacker's tracks. Below is the explanation from TeamLiquid:
"When you select units (men/buildings) it is recorded in the replay. However, some map hacks remove the recording of selections on units which are not your own. The reason for this is because previously hackers have been caught by analyzing the replay and finding cases of them clicking on things which they could not see without a map hack. Because in BroodWar selecting an enemy unit is the only way to see things like upgrades, health, build progress, or distinguish buildings that are identical while they build, decent players do this quite often.
In a game over 15 minutes, over 99% of the time a good player will have at least one selection of an enemy unit. All of the players in this list have several games played in a row (which are over 15 minutes) and without ever clicking an enemy unit once. While for only one game, there might be a 1% chance of this happening to even a legitimate player, the chance of this happening 5 times in a row is roughly 1 out of 10 billion."
With the method confirmed, more and more hackers are being found hour after hour.
The list so far:
Viktor "RoX.localhost" Lopatin
Payam "Excello.TT1" Toghyan
Roberto "eXeCuToR" Miranda (former LRM, RoX)
Xavier "KiLLaHH" Riguera (former LRM, RoX)
Joni "NaW-PuSh" Miri
Andrew "NaW-SenSei" Carmichael
Excello.TroNiC
sMi-SpadeS
faculty.Zarrr
All these players' TSL stats were nulled, most of them got kicked from their respective teams. PuSh and SenSei have confirmed using the hack. TroNiC, who was not only the 2on2 player from Excello.sc, but also a part of their management is now going to resign.
The investigation continues.
