Team leader of fnatic, the team won CDC4 last weekend, 25 year old Martin "mint" Röjder answers questions regarding the LAN itself, the team and Call of Duty 4 in general.

First of all, I would like to congratulate you for your CDC4 champion title, how are you feeling?
Right now I'm tired but very happy. Thank you.

Let's talk about a bit about the LAN as this wasn't your first CDC event, was it any different than the previous ones?
It was a lot better, and at the same time a lot worse than previous events. It was better because it had more space and better computers. It was worse because they were apparently understaffed for the amounts of teams and games that had to be supervised but all in all a very good tournament.

How do you feel your bootcamp with Roskilde, VAE and Infinity before CDC4 helped with your archievement? For how long did you practise? How did Roskilde and Infinity manage in their matches at CDC4?
Well we mainly went to Roskilde not because we thought we would get the best matches we ever were going to get. Instead we tried to use it as a preparation and see what it was going to be like playing with LAN ping and actually see if we were able to focus a little more when we needed to because sometimes we have problems with that online. All the other teams at the bootcamp were great to be around and play with, and don't get me wrong, we don't think that these guys are bad players in any way and Roskilde proved that at CDC as well. We just didn't go there because we were looking for the best teams in Europe to warm up against we just wanted a good time and get ready for the big time.

Moving towards the finals, what happened to your game when you had a 10-2 lead and the sides were changed versus TLR on mp_backlot?
Well as most people know who play the game the defensive side of backlot has a tendency to overpower the defense and they did that extremely well. I think one factor was that in the back of their head they knew they had to hurry up, which was a shame. But in retrospect I think that was the best thing they could have done to us, pushing up on us and to be fair we were quite chocked with the way they played.

We started getting some idea of how to get back in the game but it took us a long time to get there, we are definitely going to change some things on that side and make sure we are ready for a team that does that. Though it would be interesting to see what would have happened if they didn't push as much, if that would have benefited them or us, now we won't know until perhaps at i33.

Did it surprise you that it was The Last Resort who met you in the finals?
"TLR impressed me getting to the finals"
I was surprised first when they beat SL with such huge numbers as they did, I never watched the TLR versus oXmoze game so I can't tell who were better or who should have won or anything like that but I did see oXmoze vs SK on crossfire and I guess you could say that TLR impressed me getting to the finals but it wasn't a surprise really as I personally could see a number of teams being able to make finals.

What needs to be fixed tactical wise before Multiplay i33?
I'm not sure we actually NEED to change all that much, but we will anyway. Just in order to keep working on our game and see how we play best as a team, we want to keep improving and to sit down after an event and think that you found the answer would be stupid. We had to work to get where we are now and we will keep working to stay where we are. We are the team to beat now and if we didn't prepare for that it would be stupid.

ImageWhich LANs are you planning to attend after i33?
I haven't been speaking to the management about anything further than i33 so far, they have been asking though and personally I would love to attend the Antwerp Esport Festival and the Xperience later this year. But if I don't have to be picky I would love to go to any event that is announced.

Now, months later, do you think you made the right decision joining up with fnatic?
Back then I thought it would probably not matter what team we finally went with because it would ultimately be on our shoulders, the players, to perform. Now that we have been with fnatic for a while I'm glad that's where we ended up. We've loved it so far and that has probably helped us perform.

What does Call of Duty 4 need or what that it already has need adjustments to become a mainstream game? Is the sniper perfect as it is now?
"I think the sniper is perfect at the moment."
I will probably get flamed for this but I think the sniper is perfect at the moment. Saying that I would not protest if it was changed to a breath system with instant no sway. My feeling right now is that no matter if you have a breath system or not you play the both systems pretty much the same way, what makes snipers handle the role differently in my opinion are how they play the role not how the weapon actually works.

There has also been a lot of talk about the SMGs and whether to limit them or change the damage it does. I myself have been opposed to limit since it not only limit the weapon but also the teams. On the other hand starting to change the damage on separate guns is also a risky business. Right now I'm pro limitation but as we have seen at this tournament SMG teams did not do all that good, apart from TLR. (who I personally don't think of as an SMG team, just some people like to call them that.)

In order to further promote the game we need more amazing tournaments like this with awesome matches. There were not many matches that weren’t really exciting, I'd love CodTV but there are ways around that if tournament organisers really want to pick the game up. PAM also does a lot for the game, something that the XBOX cousin completely lacks.

Thank you for your time, would you like to say something before we finish?
I'd like to thank fnatic, Sam, Joe, Jay, Anne, and everyone involved in that. Milan, Luke and everyone else for showing up at the tournament. I'd also like to thank my players for proving they are professionals.
