Carmac talks to Yoan "ToD" Merlo, the Extreme Masters defending champion and tipple Samsung Euro Championship silver medalist one week before his appearance in the 2008 edition of both tournaments. You're the EM defending champion. Do you see yourself as a favourite of the event?
Although my current shape seems really unstable I believe that I am still one of the favorites of the event.
One of? Who else?
I don't think you'll be too surprised if I named Lucifer, Lyn, Grubby and HoT.
Why is it that every time I interview you before an event, you're unprepared? Is that a smokescreen or is it more you not being the best example of a professional gamer?
I never said I was unprepared. I said my shape is not stable, and by shape I meant results in tournaments. One day I can play really great but the next one really horribly. This is my biggest weakness right now.
I have little clue about why it might be, I don't know how to deal with it or it would be solved already. ^^ I guess I just need to try harder with everything.
How many hours did you put into preparation for the CeBIT events?
So far not too many, hard to give a figure, maybe three hours a day until now.
Does it suck to get second at the Samsung Euro Championship every single time?
Haha, I may have felt so every time I failed to reach the first place, but right now I'm thinking it's a very satisfying result to finish so highly-ranked three times in a row.
Which event does the competitive side of you want to win more (disregarding money) - EM or SEC?
EM uses a much better format in my opinion, and all the big games are shown live and watched by a lot of people, that really helps to motivate you to pull crazy micro/games and strats.
Actually I have heard a rumor saying we might not be able to play both of the tournaments, but in case we would be, I think it's a little more of a disadvantage because it gets really exhausting to play so many games in such a short time. Warcraft matches require a lot of focus and CeBIT always makes me feel like I have to give 110% of myself.
It's a very physical tournament, there are a lot of people around, we have to go from a tournament to another, re-set up all the time, there is a lot of noise and heat, I really feel like I'm a high level athlete playing a very physical sport when I play at CeBIT.
Is it a coincidence that you seemed to have improved much result-wise at the same time when Grubby started slipping?
I have no idea about this... My results don't have anything to do with Grubby's shape. On the other hand, since I moved to China I think I have improved dramatically, and it reflected on my performances in several tournaments shortly after relocating there. When I won EM last year I remember practicing mostly only with Chinese players before it, the skill level here is ridiculously elevated.
Why does everyone always ask me about Grubby? We are not tied to each other, we are not even team mates anymore. I don't particularly want to talk about him nor his results.
However, I'll do you the courtesy of answering your question if you promise it's the last you had to ask about him by stating that I don't think his results got worse. I would even say that he's stronger than ever right now with very stable results in NGL/WC3L/zotac or whichever games he takes part in.
Now of course if you're talking about 2004/2005 where he was winning everything, I guess the game has evolved and the players did too. It's really hard to be dominating for a very long time and only few players did it so far, being Grubby, Sky and Moon.
Does this have to do with why you left Four Kings?
I don't think it has to do with it , so.... not to my knowledge. And I didn't "leave" Four Kings as opposed to what everyone says, If you check the news that was posted on the website it's described more as a "parting ways" thing. Meanwhile Grubby recently mentioned "ToD's removal from the team" in an interview done on the website of his new team. I guess that leaves you wondering where the truth is now. :D
You are one of the players that moved to China to play WC3 full time. Do you think esports will be global or fragmented in the future? WC3 in China, SC in Korea, consoles in America, CS 1.6 in Europe etc...?
Hard to see what exactly is coming.... But so far it looks like it will remain like this. So unless a great game comes out to unite all the communities (Starcraft II) I don't think it will change.
Actually it's quite untrue, surprisingly, I've read the same thing earlier. We are pretty united in my opinion and I had a good time with my teammates in Berlin. There is HasuObs I already was friends with him as I played him many times before, including a few times in Germany.
SaSe who lived at my place for around three weeks prior to NGL, nothing to add, and finally there is Happy. I'm not too close to him but we talk sometimes, he's pretty cool in real life as well as online and has a funny accent. I liked how I told him before an important game at NGL "time to FREAKIN RAPE HIM" and he looked at me with the most serious face ever and said "Of course....."
What kind of role do you see for Mouz in the WC3L?
I think we are as good any other team if we prepare enough. We are quite underrated in my opinion. We need to first get more stable results and people's opinion will change about our team.

How do you get along with your team mates at Mousesports? I have heard that you were not a united group at the NGL One finals in Berlin. More like a few individuals.Actually it's quite untrue, surprisingly, I've read the same thing earlier. We are pretty united in my opinion and I had a good time with my teammates in Berlin.
