CGS salaries shrink even by 33%

GameRiot got their hands on the player packet that was given to players attending the CGS North American Combine. According GR, the document holds information about the player salaries. Those will shrink by a large percentage compared to the previous season where every player got $2,500 a month (an annual $30,000 for North American players).

The next season will have a gradation of earnings depending on the player's status in the CGS. The highest earning players will be Franchised Players (one per team) with an annual income of $31,000, then Protected Players (four per team) with $24,000 and rookies will earn $20,000 a year. Non-Americans will earn even less than that because the CGS season starts later outside of North America. The European CGS draft takes place in May.

This means that for most players the pay is cut by either 20% or even 33% compared to the first season with only Franchise Players getting a 3.3% raise.

"It is a good thing in the way that people will strive to be franchised or protected players," says one of last season's CGS players, "but it's still not enough income for a regular player to call it a full time job and most players will still have to work."

In comparison, the very best Warcraft 3 players in the world are paid between $4,000 and $10,000 a month. Still, the CGS remains a very lucrative league. It paid out $1,000,000 in prize money in the first season's World Championship.
