The Linke with the future

ImageNot long ago, millions of eyes in Germany saw the bassist of one of the most acclaimed rock groups in Germany pay tribute to his heroes. He did so by putting on an SK Gaming shirt to a talk show.

Age 20, Christian Linke plays the guitar in Panik. His band has given concerts in Germany and abroad, played in front of 100,000 people and one of their singles has got well over 2,000,000 views on YouTube. He is an idol for thousands of young people.

And SK's players were idols for him.

Ten years ago, before most of you knew what SK was, Christian was ten years old. He was fascinated with the skills of the original Schroet Kommando team with Griff, Kane and the others. He was a fan when SK won tournaments with HeatoN, he was a fan when SK won the WC3L with Lyn.

Most importantly, he was not ashamed of strutting it in front of millions of television viewers in one of his band's appearances before this week's Bundesvision contest.

The point of the story is not that a rock star wore an SK Gaming tee on television. The point is that a rock star wore the shirt of a gaming team. Stop for a minute and think where things have gone. A god for swarms of screaming fans is one of "us."

At a time when esports is seen as obscure, misunderstood or geeky, it has an ambassador that understands it, loves it and is part of it. He is the personification of everything that stands in opposition to the idiotic stereotype tagged to esports addicts. He is talented, successful and anything but a nerd.

Christian Linke wields the power to sway hundreds of thousands of minds. The best ambassador we can wish for.

He comes from a generation that grew up with computers, playing video games online with their friends. The esports children will soon hold important positions in business, media and politics. They too will become ambassadors for competitive gaming. It is the kids that admired SpawN yesterday that will bring esports to the next level tomorrow.

There are more Christians out there.
