The ban on Counter-Strike and EverQuest ordered in October 2007 by a Brazilian federal court was carried into effect last Thursday, from now on these games won't be available on sale anymore.According to the PROCON (a foundation for protection and defense of the consumers) and to the Brazilian judge who introduced the law, Carlos Alberto Simoes, Counter-Strike and EverQuest promote "the subversion of public order, were an attack against the democratic state and the law and against public security." Therefore the selling of these two games was forbidden and the federal police already started seizing copies.
Like many other banned games, Counter-Strike and EverQuest are "harmful to consumers' health", even "addictive as drugs" as some questioned psychologists explained. Counter-Strike was classified as a very dangerous game where teenagers learn war tactics and with a special mod they can even play the role of Rio de Janeiro's drug trafficker.
The same goes for the MMORPG EverQuest which isn't even officially released in Brazil. The Brazilian court claims that by undertaking the various missions and quests in EverQuest the player is brought to continuously choose between good and evil and eventually led to the unavoidable psychological confusion.
It seems like EA Brazil is already operating: after a press release explaining that the contents debated (like the map CS_Rio) are user-generated, EA is now preparing for the legal step.
