One of the most prestigious gaming events the Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) has recently released the games that will be played in the competition for 2008, ESWC is hosted in over 50 countries and is always a spectacular event.
To get into the event you have to attend a Qualifier held in your country and earn your place to go to the finals, which is an honor, you get to represent your country and play amongst the best in the world. ESWC was created by a French team which had been involved in setting up Gaming tournaments since 1999, the first ESWC tournament was held in July, 2003 where the old SK Ladies Counter-Strike team in the form of Atalante, MissHyper, Aurora, Missy, Ivy managed to take Gold

This tournament would be better in the EU, or asia. This tournament will be as non-memorable as WCG San Francisco for the spectators.
Sorry what? You did happen to notice the inclusion of Quake III and how strong the North American community and players were?
Quake 3 is irrelevant.
Also locking players to play CGS only leagues or small pointless events, you are telling me that is fair for everyone? The Yanks love to point the finger but ignore when the finger is being pointed at them.
If you believe that the ESWC is a top tier event, than shouldnt the games reflect that? I dont care how much skill Quake 3 requires or if it once was the best FPS on the planet. Fact is that there are few people playing this game outside of a few Americans, brits, swedes and 1 or 2 other people. The Quake 3 event is going to end up being one of those invite side tournaments which has nothing to do with the actual idea of an ESPORT WORLD CUP! Few countries will hold qualifiers, and we will get some dubious system to select the handful of players getting invites.
Thats why it is a joke to call it an official ESWC game.
I dont think it is the ESWC job to keep a dead horse alive. What is the deal if for 1 year there is no FPS 1 vs 1. Fact is Quake 3 is taking the spot which should have gone to a different game.
As a side entertaining freakshow (unofficial tournament) Quake 3 is good enough, I will agree to that. How ever to elevate it to the same status as a CS 1.6, or Warcraft 3 tournament is a joke, in my humble opinion.
It's the most popular death match game, and always has been. None of the new games have a community as competitive or large as Q3. So it's in no way, shape or form, taking an undeserved spot at all. Nor do I see a problem with the idea of an invite tournament, when regional qualifiers have always, and I mean always been flawed, irregardless of the strength and popularity of a game.
Your arguments highlight nothing but the fact that the best players in death match from the same few countries and logistically it would've been easier to pick Quake 4 or UT3, but as you stated yourself, 'If you believe that the ESWC is a top tier event, than shouldnt the games reflect that?', arguably, the game would either be Quakeworld or Quake III if that statement was true, it's as simple as that.
When I talk of esports, I look at the whole picture not just FPS games, it is clear you have a more narrow view of esports. I never suggested that UT3 or another FPS should replace Quake 3. If anything I was suggesting dropping the 1vs1 FPS all together until the community adopts a new FPS in significant numbers to warrant such a tournament at a prestigious event. After all it is this community which abandoned Quake 3 in the first place.
Nothing is worse than people glorifying and clinging on to the past, in my book.
Also Q3 was a amazing choice
Dota also perfect!
Trackmania I don't know the game that well but i only hear good things! =] the guys at ESWC know what they are doing, look how successful ESWC is! =] simple ain't it? ;)
'We have made the choice to keep a fast FPS game in ESWC in spite of the fact that the community of players is reduced and that the challenge is reserved to an elite. In a word, this family of games offers the most obvious demonstration of what a cyber athlete is and what electronic sports should be. We have taken the necessary time to wait and evaluate all the new potential games. At the end, none of them yet guarantee the minimum conditions to become a genuine eSports platform, stable, open to broadcast, and supported by its studio or the community through a mod.
The last titles in our short list were Q3, Q4, Warsow and UT3. We have finally chosen Quake 3 because we think this is:
a) The best software technologically: best client, server, broadcasting tools, support
b) The best display for the show and public: best readability and rhythm of match
c) The best long-term potentiality with the upcoming Quake Zero (based on Quake 3 gameplay and engine) that could be the ultimate fast and free FPS that deserve electronic sports'
No FIFA?
should really branch out into big new games if we wanna push things foward imo
what there like 4 q3 players still alive today???
dota? are you serious? bit lame imo
cs 1.6 still strong but its on its last legs
wc3...same ol same ol i guess
i really have to say e-sport circuit starting to bore me
after prolonged watching of xleague.tv and seeing amatuer gamers play games like halo, cod4 etc, i realise theres alot more fun games to watch out there.
