Competitive Communities Drop the Ball
A small observation about the attitudes of emerging communities with prospective games.

A small observation about the attitudes of emerging communities with prospective games.Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare marks the third installment of Infinity Wards highly proclaimed PC series. The game moves away from the world war two and moves into...'Modern Warfare'.
Publicly the game is unashamedly fun. There are few things I find annoying when playing, although the small things are like iron pokers burning into the skin. Two of the perks (similar to WoW's talent points), 'Last Stand' (when you've 'died', you drop to the floor and pull out a pistol, so it means you can snatch back a cheap kill) and 'Martyrdom' (when you've died, you drop a grenade. Which granted doesn't sound as bad as you think, but in practice, due to the quite ridiculous overpowered nature of a grenade, means that a kill is 90% guaranteed due to the stupidity of public players movement or the fact that even with sprint enabled, you're not likely to escape the hiroshima like splash) are truly innovations invented purely to remove any skill in making a kill. What's worse is that you don't know who has these skills and who doesn't.
I personally go for the grenade launcher attachment for my primary weapon, AK47. Stopping power (extra bullet damage) and extreme conditioning (means you can sprint longer).
The maps are almost carbon copies of CoD1 and CoD2 alternatives, which is no bad thing in my opinion. The graphics are gorgeous, they've this chalk pastel quality which clashes against the modern and oppressive machinery and weapons of the players. Considering at the heart of this, is the Quake III engine, shows how far aging engines can be pushed, graphically. I only wish developers could see this.
The crux comes competitively when talk turns to the unavoidable debate of rule sets and PAM. I honestly feel that the CoD2 players themselves will determine and unfortunately limit the appeal and future of CoD4. The further the CoD series moves away from comparisons of Counter Strike the better and more support it will receive.
When Counter Strike is king, you the horse, have to make concessions in order to supplant him. Counter Strike players can sit on their laurels as prospective communities debate themselves into oblivion.
I'll be honest, I was guilty of exactly of that same reflexive instinct when Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was released. I shouted for the removal of vehicles, which I felt completely undermined the speed and thrill of the game. But I knew, part of the reason why this game would become successful is more players. The vehicles were needed to attract the battlefield players, it really was as simple as that. Finding the right balance is the hard part.
There are so many reasons and innovations why CoD4 is better than its predecessor and the competitive community has just undermined pretty much all of them. It ticks all the boxes needed for success yet they seem to be in a prolonged rush in order to set a global standard, when there isn't even a spectator capability for example. You need to know where and when to place the emphasis and removing new features of a game which is barely weeks old isn't the way to go.
Counter Strike players enjoy the ride, because CoD4 is going no where.

ps: cs forever! cod 4 good game!:)
thx all=) and for info:)
Good read =]
But to the game itself, I find it .. good tbh :D After many years of CS, DAoC and WoW (I did try other games at the same time, but didn't find them that interesting .. except maybe ET that I played for a while with my mates) I missed the arenas yesterday because of CoD4 :) On ventrilo I said that I am busy ;)
As for the rules most of the perks make the game very random and noob friendly hence why alot of them have now been removed in EU especially.
My thoughts, since everyone I've spoken to just thinks I'm biased (I played riflenade in ET as my main class). One grenade launcher attachment per team, and add it to a semi automatic or single fire gun. The weapon is direct hit instead of splash which is just wrong in so many ways. It's no different than a shotgun or a sniper rifle, except it makes you more vulnerable in certain situations.
Close range, you've to switch since there is next to no chance of hitting. Where as shotgun means almost a certain kill without much aim. The sniper rifle has a longer range and pretty safe against an attack irregardless if he misses or not. The grenade launcher sits in between and stops the game being as 'campy', it can be even used to counter act some of the previously thought 'random' and 'overpowered' perks, eg, to stop loads of people rushing a bomb site (on crash for example).
The best way is to slowly under power certain perks, instead of getting rid of them, same with the weapons. Given that both teams can use exactly the same weapons and perks I fail to see how certain things can ever be classed as over powered. Just slowly limit them instead of removing them. I mean, they added classes which just goes to show the way of thinking Infinity is wanting CoD4 to go towards.
As things stand now the game plays really nice, its similar to CS in many ways but it is far from CS in many more.
In my opinion, CoD4 is becoming even more like CS which makes it near impossible to supplant it ('1.6 anyway). 5v5, bomb defusal, round based, modern scenario, similar weapons. Infinity ward has given the CoD community the features and the opportunities in order to differentiate themselves, and judging by the opinions of the professional CoD players they want a half caste CoD2 (CoD1 in some cases) with wallbanging.
Solves that problem. Calling it a spam weapon is besides the point when you often find they are the most accurate weapons in the games they're incorporated in! Spraying is as much spam (if not more) as shooting rifle, but less skill!
Im bored at work! :/
The game itself is very 'tweakable' and IW made a good job on this one, you can change whatever you want according to your imagination or will. The problem is that a group of elite is trying to make CoD4 to look like CS and it can work, but it's a two-sided knife, either you can be successful and attract a lot of players to change the game (cod4 is much more eye-appealing, no one can denies it. IW is working on CoDTV, that will be a great boost). on the other hand they can be so addicted to CS that they don't see anything different on CoD4 reasonable enough to change and stick to 1.6/source.
imo, the game needs some limitations, of course. but let's be honest, a guy would need to 'ace a team' to get an airstrike, that would happen once in a while and it could somehow cool to see during a match an airstrike, heli wouldn't be impossible as matches are played on a 5vs5 basis. C4 and claymores must me removed or the map would look like a mine field. grenade launcher, that's a good point to discuss about, imo should be allowed with a certain weapon only. perks choices atm are good and enough to make the game random because either you sprint for longer or you shoot through another wall, your aim is steadier or you do a bit more damage, players also have to play with it.
overall, the settings right now are set for competitive gaming. the problem now, as mick said, is someone willing to give it a try. WSVG did it and was a success on Dallas, ESWC's chairman made a comment on cod4 but for console (i hope that was a joke), CPL is dead, KODE5 would be a good one but it's already running, WCG is just a dream, it's korean-based organization :\
i'm writing too much.. i guess i like the game too much :p
tru dat boiiiiiii!
