Future brings 1000 players deathmatch

Yes, you heard it right! According to one of Microsoft's latest researches, a new technology named for Donnybrook promises a thousand players deathmatch in one simple map. The main restrictions of hindering this possibility has however been the Internet bandwidth of usual customers, but Microsoft in spite hopes that a change will come, and "make the dreams of many gamers come true". Microsoft has already done a few of small tests by using so far the Quake 3 PC game. These tests have given "a stunningly promising" impression. Donnybrook has an aim to enable the massive simultaneous gaming that will exploit two technologies. One technology is Guidable AI that replaces the players where you are not paying attention to with local bots. The second is Focus Sets that devotes bandwidth to the things where you are paying attention to instead. A few snippets can be found below, taken from Microsoft's Research paper. (PDF) ..even in a large firefight, a player will tend to focus on his or her current target. This principle implies that the aggregate amount of attention in the game grows only linearly with the number of players, not quadratically. As a consequence, there is always sufficient capacity, within a constant factor, to maintain update rates proportional to player attention. Thus, an object's update rate to a player should vary based on his or her attention on the object. Our focus set technique implements this differentiation in update rates. ..it is more important to ensure that the change of a replica's position obeys game physics than to minimize its error with respect to the [it's actual position]. Our guidable AI technique achieves this realism. Guidable AI makes replicas act in a realistic manner between updates, unlike traditional replicas which only perform dead-reckoning of position between updates. Microsoft's Donnybrook is a technology that will turn the whole online gaming into a new level if the research gets continued as promising as its been by now.
