World of Warcraft's popularity has been growing rapidly ever since it was released in USA, November 2004.
Today Blizzard released an official press release stating that the number of subscribers world wide now exceeds 9 million.
The expansion (The Burning Crusade) is still to be released in the mainland of China, which means that the number of subscribers probably will increase a lot more.
- "We've worked hard to provide a compelling experience for our players, and we plan to continue updating the game with exciting new content for them to enjoy for many years to come." said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard.
13€ * 9,000,000 equals lots of money... each month!

But when they subscribers, does that mean that actively play or just 9 million accounts have been bought.
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules."
Could be just because they haven't been able to ship enough over there :]
