Weeks ago, the CPL announced after a vote that Quake 3 will be a part of the CPL World Season 2006. That was a huge surprise for all the duel gamers for sure, but they surprised us now once again. Because the CPL announced today that Quake 3 will be game which will be also played at the Season 2007. For the 2007 World Season the CPL will use new maps. These maps will be announced during the CPL Championship Finals 2006 this December. Quake 3 is for sure one of the best one-versus-one FPS games, if not the best. But the question is, why are they not choosing Quake 4 for example, Quake 4 isn't bad at all and they should give it a chance to improve for competitive gaming. Also a good question is, what are the players going to do next year if the other major tournaments will choose once again a different one-versus-one FPS game than the CPL? Maybe Unreal Tournament 2007? We will see. But its definitely good to know, that there will be a world season again. You can found the CPL annoucement below.

The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) is pleased to announce that the Quake 3 Tournament for the CPL 2006 Championship Finals is now completely filled, including all 10 waiting list spots.
This tournament marks the first time that a CPL tournament has been completely sold out four months before the competition. This tournament marks the return to Quake 3 of some of the most exciting names in gaming such as Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel, Paul “czm” Nelson, Anton “cooller” Singov, and Johan “Toxic” Quick. To view a list of all registered competitors for the Quake 3 Championship Finals visit this page.
This season marks the first time in its history that the CPL relied primarily on the feedback from the community in selecting the games for its tournaments. The overwhelming vote to bring back Quake 3 as the one-versus-one tournament game by almost 80% of the community and the CPL World Partners could not be ignored.
The CPL’s One-Versus-One Competition Committee has extensively discussed the negative impact to e-sports of changing games from year to year. In an effort to provide stability to the deathmatch community, the CPL is pleased to announce that Quake 3 has been unanimously selected as the one-versus-one competition game for the 2007 World Season.
Quake 3 has been widely regarded as the best deathmatch platform to date. With the advanced spectator features including GTV and Multi View Demos (MVD), the CPL would like to ensure that its tournaments are run on the best platforms and will provide the best tournament experience for both the competitors as well as spectators. The CPL plans to continue to use Quake 3 until such time as another game can offer the same features and game play that has made Quake 3 the best choice for one-versus-one tournaments .
For those that wish to participate in the historic return of Quake 3 to the professional gaming circuit, players can still get free spectator passes for the CPL 2006 Championship Finals on this page.
