Going to LANs suck!

By Henrik 'zappater' Johansson

It all starts with going to bed late then comes the problems with falling asleep and finally you wake up after two or if you are lucky three hours of sleep. But don't worry the true pain hasn't even started yet.
The next step is getting to the LAN by your chosen way of travel. For me, it was bus and with that I mean several hours of bus. I live outside of Stockholm in a small town, for me to get to Stockholm is a one hour bus ride. I have been taking this bus ride quite often for years now and usually I sleep through it. But this time with so little sleep in me, I was afraid I wouldn't wake up, so no sleep there.

7:20 I have just arrived at T-centralen, a big hub of trains and buses ready to take you almost anywhere in Sweden and if that is not enough there is a train going directly to Arlanda Airport allowing you to be on your way to almost anywhere in the world within an hour. Waiting 40 minutes to get on a bus filled with geeks going to Dreamhack really isn't my dream, specially when it seems like you, a 19 year old punk is above the average age of the other geeks taking the bus.

Time for four or five hours of sleep and when I wake up, I will hopefully be in the middle of Elmia, Jönköping where Dreamhack is being held. Well that was my intention, but as it happened my body refused to sleep. To increase the feeling that going to LANs suck, some kids started throwing candy after about two hours. Taking the bus to a LAN is like going on a school trip, not very fun.

I arrived at 12:00, one hour earlier then expected. Awesome! Walked around for an hour looking at the place, people setting up their stuff and Dreamhack Crew being very busy. Then I found them, a bunch of quake players sitting around their computers playing quake and chatting. We were joined by Vo0, a really nice guy and incredibly good dueler, well you all know that, after all he dominated the Painkiller scene.

The rest of the day was spent at the competition site, with CS, WoW, TMNF and Quake players, though I never spoke with anyone outside of the quake community. But this is for tomorrow and hopefully there will be some interviews then as well, good night.
