Erasing of a language

Some people think that it's fair to just vote away their own language, to then install english in that country.
I don't think that is right. Actually, it's not our right to destroy a language, nor to make it more related to another. Right, we are the only one capable of it, and it's our language. But it's a language that out ancestors built up, and which we use.
It was a post in the newspapers not long ago about Swedes using too much english when they speak to eachother.
I asked my friends what they would say if they would make a public vote about removing Swedish and install English in our country instead, and one of my friends actually said "I would vote yes.".
Man, I couldn't believe my ears. He then said: "Swedish sure is beautiful, but what need do we have of it?"
Sure, it would make it easier if we spoke English as first language, right. But it's a LANGUAGE! Languages are blessed, it's like a culture. What if japan didn't have those special lamps, or the samurais? It wouldn't be as fascinating as it is today.
In short, languages are blessed and they need to be kept whole as they were made to be spoken. It's not our right to erase a language, nor will it ever be.

That's what makes it worth going to that special country, to discover a place very much different from your own.
i mean some people would have it better with this (the same for everything) and some wouldnt, -_-
nice written bwX :)
IN italy a coke costed , for example , 3.000 lires (3 german marks) now is 3 euros!!!!
1 euro, 1936 lires.
Yes English is destroinng the other lenguages....
Now , according to your logic , in France Italy Spain we should speak Latin as all these language are Latin based languages and you should speak some old Barbarian language
#9 English is a germanic language not based on latin, but yes they do evolve with globalization and capitalism incoroparting latin words. Even brand name words now.
I think you two are missing the point, he is saying the losing of part of the language is like losing what makes a certain area unique, its why most people travel. To have an experince of a culture.
I never think Sweden should switch to english as a first language. Unfortunately not many people speak my local language (Cornish), I wish I could (no time), it's like breton/welsh.
It's called evolution. It will happen.Doesn't matter if it happens in 20,50 or 100 years.it's inevitable.
I agree with #0 though, you should be proud of your language and heritage.
Then again, don't wanna take it too far either. Saw a few "Sverige för Svenskar" banners and stickers around Stockholm last time I was there.
At least you guys have language skills though. Over here people can't even speak english :/
8 billion euros for such a thing is probably true, but it's for the best. Those money are still paid by the people in form of taxes so they shouldn't cry about it.
