Updates on SK version 4

By Andreas 'bds' Thorstensson

Hey everyone,
I am really thrilled, the new site is progressing fast now. Some features are damn nice additions. I hope I will be able to add everything I have in mind before release.
There will be some changes in terms of users. First of all since so many are asking, old accounts will be moved!
A) If you fake your gender, your account will be banned. So everyone who is faking now, change back.
B) You wont be able to rename your username on the new site, so if you consider doing so, do that now. Also, - and _ wont be allowed in nicks, keep that in mind (only a-z and 0-9).
C) Only one email address per user will be allowed. So if you are using multiple accounts with the same mail address, you need to change that. Only the first one registered with that email will work.
D) I will deactivate accounts that have been idle for over a year, so if you know you havent logged in for a while do that now, or be prepared to lose the account. A deactivated account means ppl can take that username.
Stay tuned...

How to fail a league (aka WSVG)

To run a successful esport league these days are quite hard. You need a serious and structured organization, a high value set of sponsors, a dedicated and experienced staff, add a well known brand and you have come very far.
The next crucial step in making it a success are the games.
Do not try to create an esport community from scratch for games that don't have them (ie Guitar Hero and Fight Night). These can be smaller tournaments for the entertainment and maybe they will grow and become major games in the future.
Do not remove the most popular PC based esport games there is today (i.e Counter-Strike 1.6 and Warcraft III). You have the community, you just need to add the games. How hard can it be?
Do not focus on games with a very small user base with, to be honest, no real fix stars (i.e Quake IV). Guess people will be pissed about this comment, but that is how it is. Most of the interesting players quit the game a long time ago, and Quake IV is just not very popular. It reminds me of the Painkiller era.
Do not add a format which you think would work out but the community knows it won't (i.e World of Wacraft 3v3).
Do not overdo prize money for games that aren't that big yet. That will evolve with the popularity of the game. Most teams would have played the WoW tournament with a 4th of that prize money this year. Then when you have the community with you, slowly raise and raise.
And last but not least, listen to the community and its teams.

Hey guys,
been coding a lot on the new site lately, and just wanted to ask you what kinds of forums you would like to be added? The forum system will be a lot better and offer more possible subjects, so not only the games SK are involved in.
Please post in the comments what forums you want!

Hey again!
Thanks for the feedback on the last blog. Was great!
Would people be interested in beta testing the new site? My plan is to give away a few accounts so people can try out the new functions and come up with ideas, find bugs and so on.
Would that be of interest?

Skiing and forums

I got a call from a couple of my friends on Friday, they were in Åre, Sweden and asked if I wanted to come up over the weekend and have some fun. It is a 650 kilometers by car. I decided to leave on Saturday by plane and arrived in the afternoon. A cab from Östersund and I was there an hour later.
It started off with after ski on Diplomat, with a classic cover band, after about an hour and some drinks later we headed back to prepare dinner. Risotto, entrecote and zinfandel at another friends place (I dont think you read this Magnus, but thanks, I forgot to say that).
Later we went on to Bygget for some warm vodka shots and even more cover music. It was a great night overall that ended at Toffe's place.
The day after I joined my friends by car back to Stockholm, took about 6.5 hours. When we stopped for Pizza at Åsarna, we saw a Swedish icon, the Olympic cross country skiing winner Thomas Wassberg (who has put his name on the capriciosa with shrimps at the local restaurant).
When I first started my community sites I did not really think about spam. I mean the whole intention of it was to get gamers closer together, and why would anyone want to ruin that? With each new version of the SK web site I have had to increase the protection.
Lately is has gone over hand (as many have noticed). It is quite sad to see people creating phony teams and members just to destroy for the others who enjoy the communication on the site. But this is what we are facing now.
I have just started to implent methods to prevent this. Will add stricter forum rules in the upcoming days and a better system to get rid of the spammers.
So if you like the forums but can't stand the current situation, hang in there, it will get better for sure!
