MLG Team Lineups Changed Again

In a recent article I wrote about how Ensidia will be replacing the MLG Wildcard winning team “For the Alliance.” It seems that, yet again, the MLG team lineup has changed since Ensidia is no longer attending.

It really has been chaos trying to figure out who the 8th spot is going to be given to. First we had Ensidia given the spot as an 8th team. Then it turned out that they could no longer attend so MLG hosted an online Wildcard tourny with eight unsponsored teams to determine who will grab the 8th spot. The winner of the Wildcard tournament would get their hotel and travel expenses funded by compLexity. After Huggerz, Beastlol, and Avalon won the MLG Wildcard tournament with their PHD comp, they found out that Avalon couldn't actually attend the event. In this case it was only logical to give the spot back to Ensidia who was originally the first choice.

It turns out that the 2nd place MLG Wildcard team Snutz, Brogo, and Masssive playing Shadowcleave (Warlock, DK, Druid) are the ones chosen by compLexity to attend Anaheim. The team will be going as a second compLexity team and receive jerseys, funding etc. for this event.

Is this the final team lineup for Anaheim? Who knows..

Recently we've been streaming some 5v5 games on our ~2400 team. Our record is 123-10 and consists of myself Azael of team EG, Reckful of compLexity, Tenderloin '09 Regionals qualifier, and Verty '08 Regionals qualifier.





MLG Dallas: A Recap

MLG Dallas was by far the most competitive WoW tournament to date. Eight teams from the US, Korea, and Europe were invited to the event. The tournament started off with 3 of our hardest match ups X6, Fnatic, and EMG. Orangemarmalade turned and said to me, "X6 eats RMP very deliciously." And he was exactly right as they beat us 4-1 with the PHD counter comp.

Our loss against Fnatic was a result of the demoralizing series against X6. We definitely expected to do better especially with the amount of hours practiced against the rogue warlock shaman team. It seemed as if we had no strategy and were overwhelmed by the pressure of destruction warlock and the soon to be nerfed fan of knives rogue.

Our momentum started building up after defeating EMG's Priest, Enhancement Shaman, BM Hunter comp 3-2. We expected them to "train the mage" so I stacked around 900 resilience and we managed to steal two quick rounds from them. Getting Ring of Valor and a bad game quickly brought the series to 2-2 but thankfully we pulled off the last win and took the series.

From then on our record exploded, defeating three RMP mirrors: Button Bashers, aAa, and Gravitas in a row. Our series against Button Bashers was considered one of the best series of the tournament. I kept telling Orangemarmalade how fun it was to play against him, he was still kind of down after the loss and just smiled and said "bad." That match up was everything we had ever learned in RMP mirrors all mashed into one series. I'm glad one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament was truly golden and fun for the spectators to watch. After defeating them 3-1 Button Bashers did not give up and proceeded to take the next round from us after a long priest/mage vs priest/rogue 2v2 ending the series 3-2. Playing out all 5 series games is pretty awkward especially if you go 3-0. You put all your effort into the 3 games and let it all out in cheers after the wins only to find out you must play two more. I gave the admin a suggestion to make the games after a team already hits 3 worth .5 instead of 1. So if we 3-0 a team and they beat us the next two games it is a 3-1 instead of a 3-2.

The series against Gravitas was an expected 3-0 sweep. After watching their earlier rounds against Button Bashers we knew exactly what to do to grab a win. Toez played very well the entire tournament and it was pretty ironic to see Realz and Toez meet up again, both playing the same class. Realz used to play rogue on Toez's team back when they got 1st at ESL Philly.

The games against aAa were extremely close games. Whenever Enforcer was low health the team of aAa violently screamed in French almost unintentionally commanding me to peel their team off my rogue. Thorkin gets so excited after a win it's pretty funny. His voice was like an earthquake in the small WoW tourny area. Realz made sure to jokingly mock him after our series by yelling "OUI OUI." After a strong 2-0 start we took the series 3-0 after an intense priest/mage 2v2 game on Ruins of Lorderon. I later heard that the manager of aAa had told someone that his team was "grateful" to fight the American RMPs because the play style is so different from those of EU RMP teams.

The next morning we would fight Complexity to either knock them out of the tournament or risk our slot in the finals. This series found us doing everything we learned NOT to do in an RMP mirror. Our team had low energy, no communication, and was not the same team as we were the day before. I was stunned after they 5-0d us, we were all playing like shit. We definitely should have beat Complexity, but I was almost happy for them as well as disappointed in myself. Complexity hasn't done well at a tournament since as long as I can remember. Seeing those victory smiles on their face when they made the finals was something I had never seen before.

Button Bashers really had trouble finding places to eat around the hotel, since they didn't speak English too well. I showed Orangemarmalade the sushi restaurant and it turned out they ate there almost everyday. I found that my rogue has a weird obsession with wasabi as he dunked his sushi rolls into the green paste before each bite. When Hannival saw Enforcer do it he yelled "OH MY GOD!" yeah it was gross. One night for dinner we took Button Bashers to the Sports Bar which was just a hardcore American place. They served burgers, chicken strips, philly cheesesteaks, etc. Numberone, the priest on Button Bashers, ordered a Hickory Burger and when he got it he asked Orangemarmalade to ask us how to eat it. I asked Orange, "Doesn't Korea have Mcdonalds burgers?" he said, "Yes, but in Korea burgers are small, Americans have huge burgers. There's no supersize in Korea." I was kind of embarrassed by our culture at that point. Then Joey (Enforcer) owned Orangemarmalade in pool, proceeding to do trick shots and everything. It was sad to say goodbye to the Korean team, Orange and Numberone have to attend the army soon because in Korea everyone is required to go for two years. They were not sure if they were going to attend any upcoming MLG events or the ESL ones.

Despite not making the finals our team has grown in experience and learned a lot from the top tournament teams around the world.



Pookz3 - A small movie.

At first I wanted this to sort of be a trailer for an upcoming movie but I feel that making an ongoing series of small movies every 2-3 weeks would be better. Each movie will be around 3 to 5 clips of games that I've recently played. I didn't want to just make the big movie and nothing else for a year or so like I did with my first video back at level 70.

So here's a few clips over the last couple weeks of me playing RMP.

Final Game at MLG Columbus

Many people have been asking me how our team managed to pull off such a quick win against EMG in the final championship round. I'll be explaining the things that perfectly lined up for SK US to out zerg the powerful zerg of EMG's Deathknight BM Hunter Paladin.



Gates open I run in frost nova to delay their rushing opener, throw a cone of cold on the deathknight as usual and get a fireball proc. Since my rogue got flared out of stealth and chains of iced on top of the deathknight his only target at the time was the deathknight.

Right when I see *fireball* on my screen I decide to make the most of the given RNG. So I Icy Veins (to shorten the global after deepfreeze) > Deepfreeze > Improved Counterspell on the Paladin (so he cant heal or dispel the stun) > Frostbolt *5980* > Icelance *3344* > Fireball *3699*(all shattered into the Deepfreeze) > Fireblast *2365* to get the kill.

My burst alone was around 15,300 damage in the deepfreeze so that plus the mutilate damage thrown in by Enforcer scored us the instant kill on Flexx. We did not expect to get a kill at that time it was just a number of things that lined up in our favor that made it happen. Even if Payce had bubbled the silence to try and get a holy shock on Flexx he still would have died due to the global cooldown of Divine Shield.

The only way flex would have survived is if he had trinketed the deep freeze, after seeing his Paladin silenced, and used Anti Magic Shell. Players are very hesitant to trinket that early in a match because of how vulnerable to CC it makes them later in the game.

Well that's all, just wanted to write this for the people asking exactly what happened on my side of that game. Hope you enjoyed the MLG stream and be sure to cheer for us in Germany in a few weeks.




Competitive play with no Addons

This segment will focus on informing players who strive to attend future LAN events on how to prepare playing with no addons.
Addons have been very beneficial since the game was released because of the lacking UI supplied by Blizzard. Addons change the function and appearance of one's User Interface to benefit them with more tools and options. Popular Arena addons such as Afflicted and Gladius can be game changing when it comes down to small details in an arena match. Afflicted has accurate timers of enemy cooldowns such as a Mage's Counterspell timer. Gladius provides customizable enemy frames that allow one to see a PvP Trinket cooldown and set target/focus off the same frame. These addons, while ideal, are not used by top players either in hopes to attend a LAN tournament or in preparation for an upcoming one. LAN tournament rules require that players use the default interface, so for players using default interface there are some things that can be done to mimic some of these desired addons.

Stopwatch

Blizzard added an in game stopwatch mechanic quite some time ago and it is very useful in Arena. When pressed the stopwatch counts from 0 and up, however, with a macro one can set the stopwatch to start at a certain number and count down, mimicking the function of a mod such as Afflicted. For example, I use the stopwatch function to monitor an enemy Mage's Counterspell or a Warlock's Spell Lock since they are both on the same cooldown of 24 seconds. When I get Counterspelled or someone on my team calls out that he gets counterspelled I simply hit the bound macro. In the macro I have it countdown from 23 to factor in a possible one second delay of pressing the keybind. The macro for the stopwatch to countdown from 23 is

The stop watch can be dragged anywhere on the screen and has a convenient “ding” sound at the end of the timer, reminding that the Counterspell or Spell Lock is back on cooldown.

/target Arena1

The targeting functions /target arena1, /target arena2 and so on were normally only useful if one had Gladius because the order of players from top to bottom that showed on the Gladius frame were the corresponding arena1, arena2 and arena3 macro functions. But since Blizzard has recently added a default Enemy Arena Player Frame one can see who represents arena1, arena2, and arena3 in each specific match without using Gladius. After relating the arena1 – arena3 to players in arena by looking at the Blizzard Arena Unit Frame one can make specific macros to take advantage of this. For example, the gates of the Arena match open and you are fighting Rogue, Mage, Priest. The Priest pops up first on the very top of your Blizzard Arena Frame, so instantly you know he is “arena1.” This being the case, if one previously made the macro “/cast [target=arena1] Polymorph” they could easily keep rolling Polymorphs on to the enemy Priest without having to target him or put him on focus for a focus Polymorph. Players that didn't normally use the F1 F2 F3 keys, found binding “/cast [target=arena1] Polymorph” to F1, “/cast [target=arena2] Polymorph” to F2, and “/cast [target=arena3 Polymorph” to F3 quite useful. One can replace Polymorph with any spell they wish or even simply bind /target arena1 to target enemy players with ease.

Class Colored Nameplates

Class colored nameplates are key to updating oneself with the positioning of the enemy team. To use class colored nameplates to the fullest one must acquire an available “Show Enemy Nameplate” bind. With this bind in place one can easily toggle the class colored nameplates on and off to get the latest enemy team's positioning. The convenient bind is needed for the nameplate toggling because if one leaves nameplates on 100% of the time in an Arena game, their screen may be spammed with nameplates of totems, pets, etc.

Enemy Player Tab

Changing the Tab Target function, through key bindings, to only target enemy players can be very helpful in Arena. The tab target enemy players does not target Mirror Images, Totems, Pets or other entities that get in the way of your desired target. If needed one can make a separate bind to target all enemies in case they need to target pets or totems.
