Taboo ?

As we all might know, it's somewhat taboo to take other peoples trash and use it yourself. People find it less admirable to buy things on second hand etc then to buy it new. I really don't understand this, since it seems like it's almost the same thing as recycling pizza cartons and potato peel. And we all think that's a good thing right?
I'm not saying you can find me bending over in other peoples trashcans or anything hehe, I'm talking about things that you actually can use. Like clothes and furniture.

I'm not gonna lie to you, I bought some stuff on second hand that I really like, and that I use on regular basis. Not because I am poor or anything (Maybe I am, but that has nothing to do with it :P) but because I think it's a good concept. And the money goes to charity in many cases. And also as a poor student, second hand is a very nice thing, because maybe you cannot afford all the stuff you really need in the beginning when you just moved away from your parents for the first time. And then second hand can be a very good solution to your problems!

I also find it fun how people can look at you and say "Omg, that's a nice sweatshirt, where did you buy it?" and when the answer is on second hand, it's instantly not so nice anymore.

I read a nice article some time ago in a magazine. It was about a city in Europe, to bad I can't remember which one.. Anyways, Once a year all households in the city could put their "thrash" outside their apartment on the street. I'm talking about furniture now. Furniture that they maybe didn't want and was thinking about throwing away, or that didn't fit in their apartments. And then people could walk around on the streets and take whatever they wanted. So instead of throwing away all these things they just switched owners instead. I don't understand why not all cities have this.. I mean, that's something really good, both for the people and for our environment. I have for an example been looking for a proper TV-table, and I don't wanna buy a new one. It would be awesome if I could find one on the street :P

I also read a while ago about this man, that actually LIVED only out of things that people threw away.. It's weird really how that is possible and how something can be very useful in someones eyes while it's trash in someone elses.

I think people should try to swallow their pride and don't look at trash as TRASH with their eyes closed. Maybe someone else can find some use out of it. Instead of throwing so many things away we should give it to second hand affairs for example. I don't know how it is in other countries, but in Sweden it actually cost MONEY to throw away things on the dump and when you turn it in to second hand you may sometimes even get some cash for it.

It's also kinda disrespectful to throw away fully functional stuff. Both to the people who made it, but also to our environment and our fellow beings that maybe doesn't have it as good as we do.

Ah well, a lot of what you may call "whine" from me. But I think both you and me know, that trash is really something this planet could have less of. It may be hard to change the materialistic ways of human nature, but we can always try to do the best out of it, together :)

(awww that's such a cute ending don't you think? ^_^)
